Efficacy of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of symptomatic oral lichen planus: A systematic review

Abstract: The limited available evidence suggests that PDT is an effective treatment option for the management of OLP. However, due to the limited number of studies included in this review and heterogeneity among these studies, more well-designed clinical trials with adequate sample sizes are highly warranted.

“…A randomized clinical trial indicated a better efficacy of PDT therapy compared to corticosteroids [58]. Generally, PDT treatment was able to reduce pain and burning sensation and to decrease the size of the lesions in symptomatic OLP patients [53].…”

“…Psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy has been successfully used in severe and refractory cases of erosive OLP [52]. However, a systematic review on the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the management of symptomatic OLP showed inconsistent results [53]. For example, two studies reported similar efficacy of PDT and corticosteroids [54,55], while two other studies showed that PDT was inferior to corticosteroids [56,57].…”

“…They concluded that PRP could be used in the erosive form, which proved to be successful once a week when implemented 3 . In Photodynamic therapy, a photosensitizing compound (methylene blue), triggered by laser light at a certain wavelength, is used in photodynamic therapy to kill the targeted cell using powerful oxidizers that trigger cell destruction, membrane lysis and protein inactivation, and has been successfully used to relieve OLP symptoms in adult patients 5,23 .A systematic review of the effectiveness of ( PDT) in symptomatic OLP treatment, however, revealed contradictory findings. Two trials, for instance, documented comparable efficacy of PDT and corticosteroids 24,25 .…”

“…This can be explained by the fact that different photosensitizers (ALA, methylene blue, toluidine blue, etc.) and various light sources (diode laser, light emitting diode) are employed (44). Grandi et al reviewed the data on the efficacy of PDT in OLP therapy.…”
