Context: Zataria multiflora Boiss (Lamiaceae) essential oil (ZME) is believed to be a bactericide herbal medicine and might alleviate negative effects of infection. Objective: This study evaluates the effects of an ointment prepared from ZME (ZMEO) on infected wounds. Materials and methods: A full-thickness excisional skin wound was surgically created in each mouse and inoculated with 5 Â 10 7 suspension containing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The BALB/c mice (n ¼ 72) were divided into four groups: (1) negative control that received base ointment (NCG), (2) positive control that daily received Mupirocin V R (MG), (3) therapeutic ointment containing 2% ZMEO and (4) therapeutic ointment containing 4% ZMEO, for 21 days. Wound contraction, total bacterial count, histopathological parameters, antioxidant activity, qRT-PCR analysis for expression of IL-1b, TNF-a, VEGF, IGF-1, TGF-b, IL-10, and FGF-2 mRNA levels were assessed on days 3, 7, and 14 following the wounding. Results: Topical administration of ZMEO significantly decreased the total bacterial count and wound area and also expression of IL-1b and TNF-a compared to the control groups (p < 0.05) in all days. This could also increase significantly the expression of TGF-b, IL-10 IGF-1, FGF-2, and VEGF, and also angiogenesis, fibroblasts, fibrocytes, epithelialization ratio, and collagen deposition and improve antioxidant status compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Discussion and conclusion: ZMEO accelerated the healing process of infected wounds by shortening the inflammatory factors and increasing proliferative phase. Applying ZMEO only and/or in combination with chemical agents for the treatment of wound healing could be suggested.

Campylobacter jejuni (CJ) is the most prevalent zoonotic pathogen of chicken meat and related products, which may lead to gastroenteritis and autoimmune diseases in humans. Although controlling this bacterium is important, CJ strains resistance against traditional antibiotic therapy has been increased. Vegetable oils and fats are natural biomaterials explored since the Ancient times, due to their therapeutic properties. Nanotechnology has promoted the miniaturization of materials, improving bioavailability and efficacy, while reducing the toxicity of loaded active molecules. In this work, a screening of 28 vegetable oils was firstly performed, in order to select anti-CJ candidates by the disc diffusion test. Thus, the selected liquid lipids were used as active molecules in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) formulations. The three resultant systems were characterized in terms of particle size (~200 nm), polydispersity index (~0.15), and zeta potential (~-35mV), and its physicochemical stability was confirmed for a year, at 25°C. The structural properties of NLC were assessed by infrared (FTIR-ATR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The spherical nanoparticle morphology and narrow size distribution was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron (FE-SEM) analyses, respectively. Then, the in vitro antimicrobial activity test determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each formulation against CJ strains, in both free (1–3 mg/ml−1) and sessile (0.78 mg/ml−1) forms. Finally, the in vitro biocompatibility of NLC was demonstrated through cell viability using VERO cell line, in which F6 was found twice less cytotoxic than pure olibanum oil. Considering the abovementioned achieved, F6 formulation is able to be evaluated in the in vivo anti-CJ efficacy assays.

Encapsulation has emerged as a vitally important tool for protecting the integrity of critical chemicals and improving the delivery mechanisms of natural/synthetic drugs, enabling the controlled release of ingredients and the maintenance of their chemical, physical, and biological properties. It is well known that essential oils (EOs) provide a valuable alternative for food preservation, as they help reducing the deterioration of foodstuffs as well as the proliferation of pathogens. Nevertheless, EOs are highly volatile and lipophilic, rendering them insoluble in aqueous systems. In addition, their secondary metabolites are extremely susceptible to environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, light, and oxygen. Therefore, encapsulation of EOs is an innovative option not only for preserving these substances but also for promoting their stability, controlling their release, and optimizing their efficiency and bioavailability. In this sense, this review aimed to describe current techniques and approaches used to incorporate natural hydrophobic compounds, covering EOs. It also examines whether encapsulation technology can be used efficiently in drug discovery and development. Studies have shown that microencapsulation, the use of nanoparticle, and liposomal are the most effective techniques for encapsulating EOs. Other encapsulation systems included spray drying, coacervation, and emulsification.
