Efficacy of Mandibular 2-implant Overdenture

Abstract: The extent of heterogeneity Knowledge Transfer Statement: This meta-analysis shows that mandibular 2-implant overdentures are significantly more satisfactory to the general edentate populations than new conventional dentures. The results also show that mandibular 2-implant overdentures provide significantly better oral healthrelated quality of life than do new conventional dentures. These results should be shared with edentate patients in planning their treatment.

“…Different attachments have no detected significant differences in terms of OHRQoL or self-perception of oral conditions. Both tested attachments led to major improvement, in agreement with well-described results with mandibular implant overdentures ( Kodama et al 2016 ). These findings can be explained by a wider array of variables behind self-perceived oral health as compared with patient satisfaction with SIMOs ( Souza et al 2010 ; de Souza et al 2020 ).…”

“…Despite limitations such as ridge resorption and limited patient adaptation, conventional complete dentures (CCDs) still represent the most common treatment for edentulism [ 5 6 ]. Implant-retained complete overdentures (IRODs) are a valuable alternative to CCDs that potentially improve oral function, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and patient satisfaction compared to CCDs, with an adequate long-term clinical prognosis [ 7 8 9 10 ].…”

“…Supported by the positive patient-centered outcomes, IRODs retained by 2 interforaminal implants (2-IRODs) have been described as the first-choice standard of care for treating mandibular edentulism [ 10 11 12 ]. Recent advances in tapered implant designs have further expanded the capability to achieve sufficient primary stability even in situations of compromised bone quality, which might further help expand the target patient population of 2-IRODs [ 13 ].…”

“…In the 1990s, and after the introduction of endosseous dental implants and their use to retain and/or support removable prostheses, many authors started to evaluate the differences between conventional dentures and implant-retained overdentures [ 4 , 5 ]. Awad et al (2014) and Kodama et al (2016) found that, when compared with conventional dentures, mandibular two-implant overdentures significantly improved patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) for edentulous patients [ 6 , 7 ].…”
