Efficacy of Itraconazole Versus Terbinafine for the Treatment of Tineacruris.

Abstract: Introducti on: Tenia Cruris is the commonest dermatophyte infecti on which is common in men and aggravated by warm humid conditi on Teniarubrum is the main species for the disease 1,2 . Itraconazole and Terbinafi ne are the bett er newer drugs for the therapeuti c opti on due to their effi cacy, convenient and less side eff ect. Itraconazole is a wider spectrum Thiazole group of fungistati c drugs which inhibit sterol 14 α demethylase impairing biosynthesis of fungal ergosterol. Similarly Terbinafi ne is broad… Show more

“…9 Observations similar to our study were made in Nepal by Shakya et al which showed that itraconazole has high cure rate and less failure rate without side effects in comparision to terbinafine. 10 Also, in contrast to our study where we found itraconazole to be most efficacious drug, a study by Sultana et al in Bangladesh found more number of patients to be resistant to itraconazole, followed by fluconazole. Least drug resistance was found with terbinafine.…”

“…This is similar to an earlier study in patients of tinea cruris who also found itraconazole to have higher cure rates as compared to terbinafine. [9] Although studies on toenail onychomycosis have found terbinafine to be more effective than itraconazole,[16] we found the reverse to be true for tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Both the drugs have a similar pharmacokinetic profile.…”

“…It has shown good results in the treatment of dermatophytosis at doses of 100 mg once a day for 2 weeks and with 200 mg once a day for 7 days. [910] Because of frequent relapses at short intervals, some physicians have used it in doses of 200 mg once a day for prolonged periods. [1112]…”

“…It has shown good results in the treatment of dermatophytosis at doses of 100 mg once a day for two weeks and with 200 mg once a day for seven days. 16,17 But due to frequent relapses at short intervals, some physicians in India have used it in doses of 200 mg once a day for prolonged periods. 7,18 High dose of itraconazole may not be beneficial due to non-linear pharmacokinetic property.…”

“…Some recent trials compared the efficacy of terbinafine and itraconazole but in standard doses and duration. 16,21 Recently, a combination of itraconazole and terbinafine has also been studied 22 suggesting need of either high dose or combined dose of different systemic antifungals in current settings in India. But there is no any study comparing high dose of terbinafine against standard dose of itraconazole.…”
