Efficacy of Intravaginal Progesterone Administration Combined with Prostaglandin F2.ALPHA. for Cystic Ovarian Disease in Japanese Black Cows

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to investigate cystic ovarian disease (COD) in commercial Japanese Black cows and to evaluate the efficacy of 7-day insertion of an intravaginal progesterone insert (CIDR) combined with prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α ) at CIDR removal. Experiment 1 was conducted to group cysts into 4 patterns based on alteration of plasma progesterone (P 4 ) concentrations on d -7 and d 0 (=CIDR insertion) with 1.0 ng/ml as the cut-off level by ultrasonographic examination of 28 cows with… Show more

“…The recovery rates, conception rates and days to conception did not differ between follicular and luteal cysts. Iwakuma et al (2008) evaluated the efficacy of 7-day insertion of CIDR combined with prostaglandin F 2 α at CIDR removal in the treatment of COF > 40 days p.p. The conception rates within 60 days after CIDR removal were above 50%.…”

“…Various progesterone releasing intravaginal devices, such as the progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and the controlled internal drug-releasing insert (CIDR) have been used in the treatment of COF. However, there were only few studies about the treatment of COF occurring after puerperium with progesterone inserts and the results were inconsistent (Douthwaite and Dobson 2000, Zulu et al 2003, Ambrose et al 2004, Iwakuma et al 2008.…”

“…Oestrus rates ranging from 82 to 100% and conception rates at 1 st oestrus ranging from 18 to 28% have been reported after treatment with P4 (Douthwaite and Dobson, 2000;Zulu et al, 2003). According to Iwakuma et al (2008), treatment of OC with the CIDR implant followed by PGF 2α upon removal ensured good reproductive performances.…”

“…Cows receiving these treatments are monitored carefully for estrous sings and inseminated at the first post-treatment estrus. Such treatment regimens, however, have been associated with prolonged treatment-to-insemination intervals [5,9,12,13,19,20] with difficulties to differentiate between recovery in response to treatment and spontaneous recovery [21].…”
