Efficacy of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents

Abstract: These preliminary findings support the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of 12 weeks of IPT-A in acutely depressed adolescents in reducing depressive symptoms and improving social functioning and interpersonal problem-solving skills. Because it is a small sample consisting largely of Latino, low socioeconomic status adolescents, further studies must be conducted with other adolescent populations to confirm the generalizability of the findings.

“…Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) has been found to alleviate depression by improving interpersonal problems [45]. As Interpersonal Psychotherapy has been successfully applied in various populations, including adolescents and young adults [46,47], IPT could be adapted for use within the trans population [48]. IPT can also help people to develop new ways to deal with negative emotions and therefore reduce NSSI rates.…”

“…These eight treatments were cognitive, cognitive-behavioral, or interpersonal in orientation, and half utilized symptomatic as opposed to diagnosed samples of adolescents. On average, treatments with parent partners yielded a small positive benefit (weighted mean ES = .25), with two of these eight treatments generating an effect size greater than .50, including one interpersonal and one CBT trial (Mufson, Weissman, Moreau, & Garfinkel, 1999;Stark, 1990).…”

“…IPT-A has been demonstrated to be superior to clinical monitoring (which included brief supportive therapy) at the end of 12 weeks of treatment (75% vs 46% recover y respectively), in a sample of 48 clinicreferred adolescents. 22 A small study of 71 Puerto Rican young people compared three groups: IPT, CBT and a waiting-list control group. Both the IPT and CBT group did better than the waiting-list control, but there was no significant difference in outcome between the two therapies.…”

“…IPT-A was superior with regard to reduction in depressive symptoms and reduced functional impairment; these gains were maintained at 16-week follow up. 24 Historically in the UK, the paucity of therapists trained in IPT-A limited the availability of this treatment, but this is now being changed with the CYP-IAPT initiative which includes a module on IPT-A.…”
