Efficacy of Flow Restrictors in Limiting Access of Liquid Medications by Young Children

Abstract: Objectives Annually, tens of thousands of children are brought to emergency departments for unsupervised medicine ingestions. We assessed whether adding flow restrictors to liquid medicine bottles can provide additional protection against unsupervised medicine ingestions by young children, even when the child-resistant closure is not fully secured. Study Design From April – May 2012, we conducted a block randomized trial with a convenience sample of 110 3- and 4-year-old children from 5 local preschools. Par… Show more

“…Child-resistant packaging, proper measuring, and flow-restriction delivery devices may make the biggest impact on decreasing both types of exposures. 21 . The data capture system was unique in that it collected real-world consumer experiences, which are data not obtainable from randomized control trials.…”

“…Flow restrictors effectively limit young children's ability to empty the contents of liquid medicine bottles. 30 Applying this technology to liquid nicotine bottles could limit the dose ingested by children who gain access to these bottles. Additionally, the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act only applies to liquid nicotine bottles and does not address the packaging or design of e-cigarette devices themselves.…”
