Efficacy of fetal stem cells in Duchenne muscular dystrophy therapy

Abstract: The absence of effective treatment methods for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) calls for new therapeutic approaches. One of the promising treatment methods for DMD is stem cell therapy. This study demonstrates the impact of fetal stem cells (FSCs) on functional capacity and life quality of DMD patients and the ability of FSCs to prevent DMD-related complications in order to inhibit the disease progression. FSC therapy substantially improves functional capacity, life quality, left ventricular ejection fractio… Show more

“…The clinical guidelines presented in this document apply more to mature/functionally differentiated cell therapy. To date, clinical trials of treatments based on those categories of cells have been carried out in over 40 countries with documented safety and functional neurological improvement for patients with CNS diseases and damage 74 114 .…”

“…Therefore, stem cells effect in false acupoints or placebos could result in the same mechanism of action, explaining the reduction in plasma CPK among treatments. The CPK decreasing is a good parameter to monitor the treatment [ 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Moreover, stem cells could promote muscle regeneration through their properties of self-renewal and differentiation, as demonstrated in several pre-clinical models [23] . The rationale for the use of FSCs derived from liver and brain tissue, administered on different days, is based on our previous experience [24] . In Duchenne MD, FSCs could exert a beneficial effect based not only on their ability to differentiate into functional cells, but also through a trophic paracrine effect, as they can secrete diffusible growth factors.…”
