The increasing demand for herbicides in agricultural fields affected aquatic environments as they entered into water bodies by agricultural runoff. Glyphosate (GLY), an organophosphate herbicide, is widely used in India for weed control. This study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of GLY on climbing perch Anabas testudineus by studying its effects on the gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), gonad and liver histology, spawning performance, and haematological parameters (RBC, WBC, haemoglobin). In this study, Anabas testudineus were exposed to three sub‐lethal concentrations of GLY such as T1: 2.6 ppm (1/30th of 48h LC50), T2: 3.9 ppm (1/20th of 48h LC50) and T3: 7.8 ppm (1/10th of 48 hr LC50) for 45 days with 12 fish in each tank. Results indicated a significant decrease in GSI, HSI, structural alterations in testis, and ovary on 30th and 45th days of exposure. Vacuolation in tissue, dilution of sinusoid, altered tissue architecture in the liver, reduction in spawning performances (fertilization and hatching rate), increase in WBC count, decrease in RBC number and haemoglobin content were observed in all treatment groups on the 45th day exposure. Thus, the outcome of the present study revealed that the herbicide could deleteriously impair reproductive fitness, alter the liver structure, and haematological parameter of A. testudineus with a possible reduction in growth and population size.

The present research work has been carried out to obtain evidence on breeding and embryonic growth of A. testudineus by using S-GnRHa. Fish were injected with three different doses (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mL/kg body weight) of synthetic hormone S-GnRHa each with three replications, where male brood fish received half of the doses of female. The fecundity of A. testudineus was ranged from 47,227 to 77,561 during the study period and except control group all the hormone received group ovulated within 12 hours of hormone injection. Among all groups, the highest fertilization rate (89.33%), highest hatching rate (79.5%) as well as highest survival rate (67.0%) was obtained at 0.5 mL/kg body weight hormone dose recipient group. The fertilized egg’s diameter was recorded as 77.59 ± 3.50 µm. The first cleavage had appeared within 18-25 min of fertilization and eventually the morula, blastula, and gastrula stages were observed at 3:10 h, 4 h, and 5:30 h, respectively after fertilization. Larvae with distinguished head, body form and tail appendage spotted between 17-22 h and the larvae started hatching at 19 h after fertilization. The average length of larvae accounted as 105.41 ± 3.73 µm. The findings of present study revealed that 0.5 mL/kg S-GnRHa could be efficient dose for successful induced breeding of A. testudineus.

A 35 days experiment was conducted to study the effect of different feeding frequencies on growth and feed utilisation in climbing perch Anabas testudineus (Bloch 1792) fry. Four different feeding frequencies in triplicate viz., 2 (T1), 3 (T2), 4 (T3) and 5 (T4) times a day were evaluated. Fry (144 nos.) of climbing perch were randomly distributed in 12 glass aquaria (50 l) containing 25 l of filtered and well aerated freshwater. Formulated pellet feed was prepared and fed @ 6% body weight to all the experimental groups at different feeding frequencies as mentioned above. At the end of the experiment, fishes were sampled to determine weight gain percentage (WG %), specific growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), survival percentage (%) and partial cannibalism rate (%). Results revealed that the WG% (112.80±2.25), PER (1.65±0.03) and SGR (2.15±0.03) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in T3 group. FCR (1.55±0.03) was lowest in T3 group. Partial cannibalism rate (%) was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the treatment group T1 (6.33±0.88) whereas the survival rate (%) was lowest in T1 (91.66±4.81). The results therefore, indicated that feeding frequency of 4 times a day (T3) could be the ideal feeding frequency for better growth and feed utilisation during fry rearing of climbing perch.
