Objectives: Mutational falsetto (MF) is a functional voice disorder involving failure to transition from the high-pitched voice of childhood to the lower-pitched voice of adolescence and adulthood. The low mandible maneuver (LMM) is used by professional singers to relax the larynx and expand the resonance space. It relaxes suprahyoid muscles and pushes the larynx backwards, so it can be used as a therapy for MF. Material and Methods: The data of 20 MF patients treated by the LMM were analyzed in this study. All of the patients were asked to complete the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) before the first session, and again 2 weeks after the second visit. The Grade-Roughness-Breathiness-Asthenia-Strain (GRBAS) scale scores and fundamental frequency (F0) were analyzed for each patient. Results: All except 1 patient reported that they completed the exercises without difficulty; the patient who did not perform the exercises cited reasons other than their difficulty. Only 2 patients failed to transition from MF to a lower-pitched voice. The GRBAS scale scores (all parameters) differed significantly between the first and second sessions. The VHI-10 score also changed, i.e., self-perceived voice quality was improved significantly, as was the F0. Conclusions: Our results showed that the LMM is an efficient and rapid technique for treating MF patients and shows high patient compliance.

Introduction Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, such as water resistance therapy (WRT), are widely used in voice therapy. However, the potential positive effects of such a therapy on vocal fold oscillation patterns in patients indicating a need for phonomicrosurgery have not yet been explored. The presented study aims to analyze the effect of WRT in patients suffering from vocal fold mass lesions. Materials and methods Eight participants with vocal fold mass lesions were asked to sustain a phonation on the vowel /i/ at a comfortable loudness and a fundamental frequency of 250 Hz (females) or 125 Hz (males). During phonation the subjects were simultaneously recorded with transnasal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV, 20.000 fps), electroglottography, and audio signals. These subjects then performed a WRT (phonation in a silicone tube of 30 cm length, 5 cm below the water surface) for 10 min. Repeated measurements of sustained phonation were performed 0, 10, and 30 min after exercising. From the HSV data the glottal area waveform (GAW) was segmented and GAW parameters were computed. Results During WRT there was an increase of the GAW related open quotient and closing quotient. Immediately after WRT, there was a drop of both values followed by a rise of these parameters up to 30 min after the intervention. Furthermore, there was no correlation between GAW and electroglottographical open quotients. Conclusions The effects observed after a single session of WRT on participants with vocal fold mass lesions showed a similar pattern to vocal fatigue.

La voz hiperaguda en mujeres es un trastorno de la voz poco estudiado. El objetivo de esta investigación es establecer un perfil vocal de mujeres con voces hiperagudas y determinar las molestias psicosociales que puede desencadenar este síntoma comparándolo con mujeres con voz con frecuencia fundamental promedio. Mediante un diseño de casos y controles se estudió una muestra de 12 mujeres con frecuencia fundamental sobre los 250 Hz. y se comparó con 24 mujeres de rangos de frecuencia fundamental dentro de la norma (210-250 Hz.). Además, para valorar las molestias psicosociales se les aplicó una encuesta de evaluación de la muda vocal (PEMUV). Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos en el parámetro frecuencia fundamental en vocal /a/ (p=0.002), frecuencia fundamental en lenguaje automático (p=0.003), frecuencia fundamental en lenguaje espontáneo (p=0.002), jitter (p=0.05) y shimmer (0.00). Además, en el análisis de la encuesta, si existieron diferencias significativas en 12 de las 14 preguntas de este instrumento. Por último, se codificaron las respuestas de la pregunta abierta, evidenciándose alteraciones familiares, laborales, frustración y confusión de edad debido a la voz hiperaguda. La presente investigación logró establecer un perfil de las mujeres con voces hiperagudas. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, las mujeres con voz hiperaguda, presentan valoración negativa de la voz, molestias a nivel emocional y social.
