Efficacy of Dexmedetomidine as an Adjuvant to Bupivacaine in UltrasoundGuided Transverse Abdominis plane Block for Laparoscopic appendicectomy: A Randomised Controlled Study

Abstract: Objective Dexmedetomidine is an alpha 2-adrenergic agonist that prolongs analgesia as an adjuvant when added in neuraxial and peripheral nerve blocks. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to bupivacaine in ultrasound (USG)-guided transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block for postoperative analgesia in laparoscopic appendicectomy. Methods A total of 60 American Society of Anesthesiologists I and II adult patients aged b… Show more

“…Inadequate use of analgesics in the treatment of pain causes unmanageable pain, and unnecessary use of analgesics causes side effects [17]. Neethirajan et al [18] used 1 µg/kg dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to bupivacaine in TAP block in their randomized controlled study conducted in 2020. Heart rate and blood pressure values in the dexmedetomidine group were significantly lower than in the control group.…”

“…It also demonstrated that DD does not influence nausea and vomiting scores and antiemetic requirements. In a randomised controlled study, Neethirajan et al [23] demonstrated that DD, as an adjuvant to bupivacaine in TAP block among patients who underwent laparoscopic appendicectomy, provided prolonged postoperative analgesia against the usage of bupivacaine alone. Patients with DD secured significantly low pain scores.…”

“…In a study by Neethirajan et al ( 13 ) 60 patients who were scheduled for laparoscopic appendectomy under general anesthesia were randomly divided into two groups. Before the beginning of the surgical incision, they underwent a TAP block using 20 mL of 0.125% bupivacaine that was supplemented with 1 μg /kg dexmedetomidine or 2 mL normal saline.…”
