Efficacy of CytoSorb®: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Introduction Cytokine adsorption using the CytoSorb® adsorber has been proposed in various clinical settings including sepsis, ARDS, hyperinflammatory syndromes, cardiac surgery or recovery after cardiac arrest. The aim of this analysis is to provide evidence for the efficacy of the CytoSorb® adsorber with regard to mortality in various settings. Methods We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library database and the database provided by Cytosorbents™ (01.1.… Show more

“…Reducing inflammation is expected to decrease postoperative morbidity and mortality, but clear evidence of this result has yet to be demonstrated [14,15]. A randomized controlled study has failed to demonstrate that hemoadsorption by CytoSorb ® (CytoSorbents Europe GmbH, Berlin, Germany), another filter very commonly used in cardiac surgery, was beneficial in the vast majority of elective cardiac procedures [16]. This result was confirmed by a recently published meta-analysis that concluded that there is no evidence for a positive effect of the CytoSorb ® adsorber on mortality across a variety of diagnoses that justifies its widespread use in intensive care medicine [17].…”

“…The effectiveness of CytoSorb ® remains a subject of controversy [33]. Triple-blinded, randomized trials investigating the acute hemodynamic, echocardiographic, immunological, and cellular effects of VA-ECMO with the concurrent use of an adsorber to mitigate or potentially prevent an associated inflammatory response in patients with cardiogenic shock have not yet been conducted.…”
