Efficacy of combined treatment with albendazole and baicalein against eosinophilic meningitis induced by Angiostrongylus cantonensis in mice

Abstract: Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Baicalein is a flavonoid originally isolated from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of the combination of albendazole and baicalein for treating eosinophilic meningitis in BALB/c mice. Therapeutic efficacy included the survival time, body weight, neurological function, leucocyte and eosinophil counts, eotaxin concentration, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity, larval recove… Show more

“…The combination of corticosteroids and anthelminthics has been commonly used for treatment of human angiostrongyliasis ( [62], and also see review in Wang et al [2]). Currently, some Chinese herbal medicines display efficacy for treating angiostrongyliasis in animal studies but have not been used in humans [63][64][65][66][67]. Surgery is required to remove worms from the eyes of patients with ocular angiostrongyliasis.…”

“…The combination regimen was also used in the outbreak in Taiwan (Tsai et al 2001). The combination of albendazole with other agents, such as thalidomide (Chen and Lai 2007), dexamethasone (Tu and Lai 2006) or interleukin (Du et al 2003), and traditional Chinese medicine baicalein (He et al 2011) was also studied. The researchers expected the anti-inflammatory effect of the additional medications could help anthelminthics alleviate CNS inflammatory.…”

“…Dexamethasone prevents an inflammatory reaction by decreasing the production of eosinophils and the Th2-type immune response (Narala et al, 2007). To enhance effectiveness and avoid the side-effects of dexamethasone and rebound of the immune response after its withdrawal, several kinds of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been used in combination with albendazole to replace dexamethasone He et al, 2011).
