Efficacy of cocoa pod extract as antiwrinkle gel on human skin surface

Abstract: Flavonoid compounds in CPE contributed to the functional cosmetic properties of CPE. The CPE which is nontoxic to skin cells help to reduce wrinkles on skin after 3 weeks of application. CPE can be used as the active ingredients in antiwrinkle products, and prolonged application may result in significant visual changes to the naked eyes.

“…In addition, through solid-state fermentation of CPH, the quality of agricultural waste has been improved and used for soil fertilizers. Finally, a particular use of CPH has been reported in cosmetology for anti-wrinkling on human skin surfaces [83].…”

“…Therefore, CPH are agricultural residues of great importance and can be used as basic raw materials for the synthesis of useful products in cosmetics (Abdul Karim et al 2016). The highly active and stable crosslinked enzyme aggregate (CLEA)-lipase from the pod husks has been tested for its hydrolytic activity and successfully characterized under optimal conditions (Khanahmadi et al 2015).…”

“…Our study on human gingival keratinocytes as well as on the two healthy skin cell lines (human keratinocytes, HaCaT, and human fibroblasts, 1BR3 revealed not only a lack of cytotoxicity for both products but stimulatory effects in terms of cell growth. In a normal environment, healthy mammalian cells divide and multiply; the presence of a toxic agent causes the decrease of cell viability [11]. The addition of either product, VHC1 or VHC2, respectively, in various concentrations, to healthy cells has resulted in two distinct events: (1) The product did not affect cell viability, thus indicating the suitability of the product for safe administration in humans, without adverse effects; and (2) the product increased cell growth thus indicating cell turnover and resulting in the formation of new cells [11].…”

When the two final products were applied on human gingival keratinocytes one could notice that all tested concentrations induced a slight stimulatory effect on cell viability.…”
