Aims: This study aims to find out the most effective newer insecticides to control shoot and fruit borer in the brinjal. Study Design: The experiment of field was carried out with randomized block design. Place and Duration of Study: The field experiment on management of brinjal shoot and fruit borer Leucinodes orbonalis (Guen.) with newer insecticides were held on during October 2018 to April 2019 at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). Methodology: Infestation of shoot was observed from each plot by counting the total number of plants and the plants infested by shoot and fruit borer from the beginning of shoot formation. Total number of healthy fruits and infested fruits were counted from five plants of each plot at the time of fruit picking. The weight of both type of fruits (healthy and infested) were recorded to calculate the fruit infestation by weight basis. The treatments were applied from the initiation of infestation to till the complete harvest of the crop at 15 days interval regularly. The recorded data were subjected to statistical analysis after transformation. The count data also transformed and percentage were transformed to angular values. Results: The treatment of spinosad 45 SC and indoxacarb 14.5 SC1 (suspension concentrate) were found best among all treatments with 3.42 percent and 3.58 percent shoot infestation respectively and the treatments chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC and flubendiamide 20 WG2 were found least effective with 4.69 percent and 4.78 percent infestation of shoot respectively. Treatments spinosad 45 SC and indoxacarb 14.5 SC were significantly reduced the 3.11 percent and 3.28 percent fruit infestation respectively. Whereas the treatments flubendiamide 20 WG (Water-Dispersible Granule) and chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC were the least effective with 4.99 percent, 4.69 percent fruit infestation, respectively. Conclusion: Among all used treatments spinosad 45 SC and indoxacarb 18.5 SC, were the most effective treatments as they recorded higher yield and higher benefit cost ratio.

Synthesis and area-wide validation of IPM technology and its economic analysis for eggplant (Solanum melongena)

Field experiments were conducted during 2019–21 in Varanasi, Mirzapur and Bhadohi districts of Uttar Pradesh, with a view to study validation and economic viability of IPM technology in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) in a farmers’ driven approach. The synthesized improved IPM technology comprising seed treatment with Trichoderma viride @5 g/kg seed; seedling root dip in carbendazim 50 wp @1 g/l followed by chlorantraniliprole 18.5 sc @0.5 ml/l solution against seed borne diseases and shoot and fruit borer, respectively, clipping of borer damaged shoots at weekly interval, installation of pheromone traps @25–30 traps/ha for mass trapping of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB), need based spray (ETL>5%) of chlorantraniliprole 18.5 sc @0.35 ml/l or emamectin benzoate 5 SG @0.4 g/l or fenpropathrin 30 ec @0.33 ml/l against BSFB, installation of yellow sticky traps, application of Azadirachtin 0.03% @5 ml/l and need based spray of thiamethoxam 25 wg @0.4 g/l or fenpropathrin 30 ec @0.33 ml/l against sucking pests like whiteflies and hoppers, collection and destruction of borer and Phomopsis blight infected fruits, Sclerotinia white rot infected twigs and branches and little leaf affected plants periodically, need based application of carbendazim 50 wp @0.5 g/l for management of Phomopsis blight and white rot, were found effective in reducing the incidence of pests and minimizing the yield losses. The adoption of IPM technology also resulted in reducing the number of chemical sprays to 10 from 21–24 in farmers’ practices (FP) fields in a season with higher fruit yields of 51.1 and 45.3 t/ha in IPM, 39.6 and 33.7 t/ha in FP and 25.7 and 20.4 t/ha in untreated control fields with higher incremental benefit cost (B:C) ratio of 4.61:1 and 4.86:1 in IPM than 3.16:1, 3.24:1 in non-IPM and 2.53:1, 2.42:1 in untreated control plots during 2019–20 and 2020–21, respectively.

Chemical ecology of Himalayan eggplant variety's antixenosis: identification of geraniol as an oviposition deterrent against the eggplant shoot and fruit borer

Summary Eggplant (Solanum melongena) suffers severe losses due to a multi‐insecticide‐resistant lepidopteran pest, shoot and fruit borer (SFB, Leucinodes orbonalis). Heavy and combinatorial application of pesticides for SFB control renders eggplant risky for human consumption. We observed that gravid SFB females do not oviposit on Himalayan eggplant variety RC‐RL‐22 (RL22). We hypothesized that RL22 contained an antixenosis factor. Females' behavior indicated that the RL22 cue they perceived was olfactory. To identify it, leaf volatile blends of seven eggplant varieties were profiled using solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Seven RL22‐specific compounds were detected in the plant headspace. In choice assays, oviposition deterrence efficacies of these candidate compounds were independently tested by their foliar application on SFB‐susceptible varieties. Complementation of geraniol, which was exclusively found in RL22, reduced oviposition (> 90%). To validate geraniol's role in RL22's SFB‐deterrence, we characterized RL22's geraniol synthase and silenced its gene in planta, using virus‐induced gene silencing. Geraniol biosynthesis suppression rendered RL22 SFB‐susceptible; foliar geraniol application on the geraniol synthase‐silenced plants restored oviposition deterrence. We infer that geraniol is RL22's SFB oviposition deterrent. The use of natural compounds like geraniol, which influence the chemical ecology of oviposition, can reduce the load of hazardous synthetic larvicides.
