Alternaria species are well‐known aggressive pathogens that are widespread globally and warmer temperatures caused by climate change might increase their abundance more drastically. Early blight (EB) disease, caused mainly by Alternaria solani, and brown spot, caused by Alternaria alternata, are major concerns in potato, tomato and eggplant production. The development of EB is strongly linked to varieties, crop development stages, environmental factors, cultivation and field management. Several forecasting models for pesticide application to control EB were created in the last century and more recent scientific advances have included modern breeding technology to detect resistant genes and precision agriculture with hyperspectral sensors to pinpoint damage locations on plants. This paper presents an overview of the EB disease and provides an evaluation of recent scientific advances to control the disease. First of all, we describe the outline of this disease, encompassing biological cycles of the Alternaria genus, favorite climate and soil conditions as well as resistant plant species. Second, versatile management practices to minimize the effect of this pathogen at field level are discussed, covering their limitations and pitfalls. A better understanding of the underlying factors of this disease and the potential of novel research can contribute to implementing integrated pest management systems for an ecofriendly farming system. © 2021 The Authors. Among various crop damaging factors, biotic stresses primarily contribute to the limitation of the growth and development of plants, which leads to huge yield losses. Globally, about 25% crop yield is lost due to diseases and insect infestation. The production and consumption of vegetables is growing worldwide due to its nutritional value in human dietary systems. The vegetables are attacked by different soil borne pathogens which compromise yield and quality. To prevent such devastating effects, pesticides are applied in high throughput vegetable cultivation practices. However, the excessive and imprudent application of pesticides negatively affects the microbial diversity and soil biological activity. This in turn, detrimentally affects the yield and quality of vegetables. Eco-friendly sustainable agricultural practices that employ low cost microbial formulations can play pivotal roles in the management of biotic stresses. The use of plant beneficial bacteria to increase vegetable production may restrict pesticides application and also prevent the emergence of resistance of pathogens against toxic chemicals. Considering these, an attempt is made herein to highlight the impact of biotic stresses especially bacterial and fungal pathogens on some of the popularly grown vegetables. This review provides information about the active biomolecules associated with disease suppression and significance of plant beneficial bacteria in the amelioration of lethal vegetable diseases. The interplay between the soil beneficial microbes and vegetables will facilitate the development of bacteria-based antagonist strategies for inexpensive production of vegetables in stressful open field conditions.

Potato is an important food crop in the world as well as in India. It is being affected by different pathogens, viz. fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes. These pathogens may cause significant yield losses of the crop, if proper protection measures have not been applied. Among potato pathogens, Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria solani, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium spp. are the major pathogens in the fungal group, whereas Ralstonia solanacearum, Pectobacterium spp. and Streptomyces spp. are in the bacterial group. For management of these pathogens, various methods, that is, chemical control, biological control, resistant varieties, cultural control and physical control, are applied. Resistant varieties are the best and cheapest method for managing the diseases. However resistant varieties are break down their resistant over the years and moreover against some pathogen absolute resistant are not available. Chemical management is the second best option for managing the diseases, due to continuous and irrational use of the chemicals; pathogens have developed resistance against certain class of fungicides/bactericides. Moreover, these chemicals also assist in environmental pollution and toxicity in the produce. Bio-agents are naturally occurring living organisms, which are found in rhizosphere, phylloplane, etc. These bio-agents help in not only managing the diseases but also increasing the crop yield. Therefore, the use of bio-agents for biological management of potato crops is the focused research area worldwide.
