Efficacy of caudal epidural injection of lidocaine, xylazine and xylazine plus hyaluronidase in reducing discomfort produced by electroejaculation in bulls

Abstract: To test the hypothesis that epidural administration of lidocaine, xylazine or xylazine plus hyaluronidase provides reduced pain and stress during electroejaculation in bulls, eight 30-month-old Nellore bulls received saline solution (control), 2% lidocaine, 2% xylazine or 2% xylazine plus hyaluronidase injected into the first intercoccygeal (Co1–Co2) epidural space in randomized order. Heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, analgesia, animal behavior and motor blockade were evaluated before trea… Show more

“…Caudal epidural anesthesia may mitigate any pain associated with electroejaculation [ 197 ] but this must be verified in further studies. However, electroejaculation is illegal in some countries if conducted in the absence of sedation or analgesia [ 198 , 199 ]. For this reason, less stressful techniques have been proposed for semen collection, such as transrectal massage [ 193 ].…”

“…In the last decade, several studies have demonstrated concerns about EE technique as a stressful and painful procedure for semen collection (Abril-Sánchez et al, 2017;Damián & Ungerfeld, 2011;Orihuela et al, 2009;Pagliosa et al, 2015;Ungerfeld et al, 2018). and oxytocin as an alternative method to stimulating the ejaculation, reducing the stress before EE in bucks.…”

“…Pagliosa et al. (2015) suggested the use of xylazine and hyaluronidase via epidural to reduce discomfort during EE in Nelore bulls. Ungerfeld et al.…”
