Efficacy of biorational insecticides against chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), infesting roses under nursery conditions

Abstract: We evaluated biopesticides based on entomopathogenic fungi, azadirachtin and horticultural oils for the management of the chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood, an economically significant invasive pest in the United States. Insecticides were applied four times at 7‐ to 10‐day intervals against established S. dorsalis infestations on shrub roses KnockOut®, Rosa x ‘Radrazz’ under simulated nursery conditions. When applied as stand‐alone treatments, Beauveria bassiana GHA (BotaniGard® ES), Metarhizium brunne… Show more

“…Thrips, mite and borer pests in chilli were effectively controlled through integrated pest management approaches including bio-pesticides and other mechanical practices such as sticky trap [15,17] . In this study, our results demonstrated that the lowermost Thrips population was documented from the blue sticky trap and pheromone mass trapping along with spraying of Fizimite and Biotrin treated plots (Table 1).…”

“…Aristizabal et al (2016) also found that spinosad conserved natural enemies, which matches our laboratory results but is not reflected in our field trial. Despite this, given our efficacy results and those of others, an effective S. dorsalis IPM program may include an initial application of spinosad to reduce pest abundance followed by a high rate application of cyantraniliprole, which provided extended protection through 35 d in the field (Bielza & Guillen 2015;Aristizábal et al 2017).…”

“…For the field trial portion of this study, the neonicoti-noid/pyrethroid combination product was deleted (Table 1). Spinosad is a reduced-risk insecticide currently recommended as an effective S. dorsalis management tool (Ludwig & Bogran 2007;Kumar et al 2013;Aristizábal et al 2017). Cyantraniliprole also is a reduced-risk product labeled for thrips control on ornamental plants (EPA 2017).…”
