Efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and four plant extracts on the mortality and development of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Cullicidae)

Abstract: The efficacy of the bio-insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti), and four plant-ethanol extracts Cinnamomum osmophloeum, Matricaria chamomilla, Seasamum indicum, and Nigella sativa was tested against larvae of filarial vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, under laboratory conditions. The Bti and extracts of N. sativa and C. osmophloeum showed the highest insecticidal activity, with LC 50 values of 7.18, 14.59, and 28.87 mg/l 24 and 48 h post treatments, respectively. The extracts of M. chamomilla… Show more

“…They tested a new isolate of Bti, called LFB-Fiocruz. The LC50 values of the tested formulation against Aedes aegypti larvae were 0.0417mg/L .Some biological properties such as pupation percent, malformation, and adult emergence of dipteran insects after being exposed to B.t., were studied by (Gad & Al-Dakhil, 2018& Zaki et al, 2020. Their results agreed with the results of the current research results.…”

“…Results were tabulated according to concentrations, considering the number of live and dead larvae with 4 replications per treatment, performed in triplicate at 24 and 48 h. Values of 50% lethal concentration (LC 50 ) as well as confidence limits were obtained by probit analysis (Finney 1971) Repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer post hoc measurements were performed to compare the means among the different extract treatments under different conditions, using the NCSS statistical software (2019).…”

“…To complement the existing efforts toward malaria control and elimination, in the year 2017, Tanzania scaled up a nationwide biolarviciding program for mosquito control in both urban and rural areas [7,8]. The intervention has the following benefits; assist in fighting against mosquito resistance to insecticides reported in the country; reduce outdoor biting mosquitoes, thus preventing outdoor malaria transmission; and assist in control of other mosquito-borne diseases transmitted by mosquito such as Culex and Aedes species [9][10][11][12]. In Tanzania, the implementation of biolarviciding is done by councils through their health department and in collaboration with community members, and it involves breeding site identification and application of biolarvicide to identified waterbodies and surveillance.…”
