Efficacy of Antibiotic and Non-antibiotic Interventions in Preventing and Treating Necrotic Enteritis in Broiler Chickens: A Systematic Review

Abstract: SUMMARYThe objective of this systematic review was to compare the efficacy of antibiotic and non-antibiotic alternatives in the prevention and treatment of necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens. In vivo experimental and observational studies that compared the administration of non-antibiotic compounds with antibiotics to prevent or treat NE in broiler chickens and that evaluated mortality and/or clinical or subclinical NE outcome measures were eligible. Four electronic databases were searched in December… Show more

“…The risk of bias (RoB) assessment deviated from the original protocol and used instead a recently reported poultry-specific method [26]. Five domains of bias were evaluated, including bias from randomization (Domain 1), deviations in interventions (Domain 2), missing outcome data (Domain 3), measurement of the outcome (Domain 4), and selection of reported results (Domain 5).…”

“…So many factors enhance the occurrence of necrotic enteritis caused by C. perfringens in poultry. Nutritional factors and coccidiosis are among the most important determinants of NE occurrence (Moore 2016;Bortoluzzi et al 2019;Bueno et al 2023). Among other factors, aflatoxins in the feed could enhance the NE occurrence (Samah et al 2020;Mehdizadeh et al 2021).…”
