Efficacy of an anhydrous stannous fluoride toothpaste for relief of dentine hypersensitivity: A randomized clinical study

Abstract: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common condition that can significantly impact an individual's ability to eat, drink and brush their teeth, or participate in social interactions (Gibson et al., 2010). Individuals may report short, sharp pain or sensitivity. Differential diagnosis is confirmed after clinical examination and exclusion of other dental pathologies (Absi, Addy, & Adams, 1987; Addy, 2000). The aetiology of the condition is linked to dentine exposure, commonly following gingival recession or ename… Show more

“…Dentin hypersensitivity and the effect of treatment is often assessed by questionnaire, clinical exam, evaporative and tactile stimuli and visual analog scale [5,6,7] in order to mainly evaluate the oral health-related quality of life. In vitro studies about dentinal tubule occlusion after treatment gives a more precise information as bias may occur in clinical settings because of subjective decisions of patients as well as examiners.…”

“…Statistically significant reductions in pain and sensitivity were seen with the 0.454% w/w SnF 2 product compared with control dentifrices without 0.454% w/w SnF 2 , with relief of DH observed in subjects during short- and long-term use [ 13 – 17 ]. However, in Chinese population, subjects used dentifrices containing 0.454% w/w SnF 2 twice daily showed no significant advantage over negative or positive controls[ 18 ].…”
