Efficacy of a single dose of a novel topical combination product containing eprinomectin to prevent heartworm infection in cats

Abstract: Cats may be infected by heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, through mosquito bites. They can develop severe heartworm disease when infective D. immitis larvae migrate and develop into adults in the pulmonary vasculature or other tissues. As there is no curative treatment for feline heartworm infection, the monthly administration of preventative treatment is recommended in endemic areas. Three controlled, blinded laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the preventative efficacy of BROADLINE(®), a novel combin… Show more

“…(NexGard ® Spectra) and moxidectin spot-on (2.5%) (Advocate ® ), is effective in preventing thelaziosis in dogs [23,24]. Considering that the topical combination containing fipronil, (S)methoprene, eprinomectin and praziquantel is highly efficacious against developing stages of lungworms and heartworms [25][26][27], its efficacy in preventing the establishment of adult Thelazia in cats is worth of further studies.…”

“…Many cats may have received macrocyclic lactones not specifically for the prevention of D. immitis, but as a therapy against other endoparasites and even ectoparasites. Anyway, prevention of heartworm infection is attainable in cats by the routine administration of macrocyclic lactones, including eprinomectin and milbemycin oxime [37,38]. Monthly chemoprophylaxis is a safe and effective option for cats living in geographical areas where D. immitis infection is considered endemic and exposure to infectious mosquitoes is likely [3].…”

“…The isolate was obtained by TRS from Berkeley County, SC, USA, in April 2014 and was validated by testing positive for heartworm microfilariae and antigen and by worm recovery at necropsy in December 2014. It is known to be susceptible to ML heartworm preventives [ 16 ].…”
