Efficacy of a Quebracho, Conker Tree, and M. balsamea Willd Blended Extract in a Randomized Study in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation

Abstract: bloating, and total constipation plus bloating scores for the herbal extract and placebo groups. The repeated measures analysis of variance tests showed a significant time/group interaction for the herbal extract effect on improving all three scores. There were significant improvements in the average constipation (p=0.0034), bloating (p<0.001) and constipation plus bloating scores (p<0.001) for the herbal extracts group compared to no improvement for the placebo arm. There were no reports of AEs over the 2-wee… Show more

“…Total study sample sizes ranged from n = 16 58 to n = 189 63 (N = 1566 total participants; Tables 1 and 2 ). Of the 25 interventions, 16 (64%) recruited participants with active IBS (Table 2 ), seven (28%) with mild to moderate UC, and two (8%) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; i.e., UC or CD) (Table 1 ).…”

“…Quebracho extract contains tannins as the active substances. They are large delocalized flavonoid structures that might have a dual function: acting as a molecular absorbent for excess hydrogen and methane and disrupting and destroying bacterial lipid layers [15]. Conker Tree extract contains escins, also known as saponins.…”

“…Conker Tree extract contains escins, also known as saponins. These substances have been shown to act as antimicrobial agents and promote intestinal motility, also potentially directly reducing methane production or emission [15]. M. balsamea Willd extract contains peppermint oil which might help with abdominal discomfort [15].…”

“…Side-effects were fewer and less severe in those receiving herbal therapy. In addition, a novel herbal complex containing quebrach, horse chestnut and peppermint leaf (Atrantil™, USA) developed for the management of SIBO characterized by high methane production and IBS-C was found to improve constipation, bloating and abdominal pain [196,197]. However, these studies did not measure the impact of treatment on bacterial overgrowth or methane production; only clinical symptoms were reported [196,197].…”
