Shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus in the middle Mississippi River provide one of the last commercially viable sturgeon fisheries in the world, yet their maturation and reproduction have not been linked. During 2005 and 2006, we sampled adult and age‐0 shovelnose sturgeon to link age at maturation, the timing and periodicity of spawning, age‐0 sturgeon production, and the resulting age‐0 growth rates. Age at maturity was later than previous estimates, the minimum age of first maturation being 8 years for males and 9 years for females. Total egg count was slightly lower than previously reported (mean = 29,573 per female; SE = 2,472). Males and females typically spawned every 2 and 3 years, respectively. Peaks in mature fish coincided with rising river stages and water temperatures at which shovelnose sturgeon probably spawn. Peaks in spent adults followed. Age‐0 shovelnose sturgeon occurred during June and July 2005 and May and June 2006, confirming successful spawning. Age‐0 sturgeon grew between 0.69 and 1.69 mm total length/d; four distinct weekly cohorts occurred each year. During fall 2006, females contained ripe eggs, males were milting, and a single age‐0 sturgeon (total length = 55 mm) was captured, suggesting that shovelnose sturgeon spawn during fall as well as spring. Management must consider the protracted nature of spawning within seasons as well as differences in spawning activity between seasons.

The sand shiner (Notropis stramineus) is a common cyprinid found throughout the Great Plains region of North America that plays an important ecological role in aquatic systems. This study was conducted to describe population dynamics of sand shiners including age structure, growth, mortality, and recruitment variability in 15 non-wadeable rivers in Iowa. Fish were collected during June-August (2007-2008) using a modified Missouri trawl, a seine, and boat-mounted electrofishing. Scales were removed for age and growth analysis. A total of 3,443 fish was sampled from 15 populations across Iowa, of which 676 were aged. Iowa's sand shiner populations consisted primarily of age-1 fish (53% of all fish sampled), followed by age-2 fish (30%), age-0 fish (IS%), and age-3 fish (2%). Sand shiners grew an average of 38.5 mm (SE = 5.7) during their first year, 13.8 mm (4.5) during their second year, and 9.0 mm (6.9) during their third year. By the 1900s, the ichthyofauna of Pemsylvania's Monongahela River basin was decimated by a combination of discharges h m industrial, coal extraction, and municipal sources. Over the past half-century, water quality improvements resulting fiom federal and state mandates have initiated a continuing recovery of fish populations throughout the mainstem. We compiled the results of recent collections from the river and its tributary network by a number of state, federal, and academic agencies employing a variety of gear. The combined sampling methods yielded 32,999 fishes on the mainstem, representing 14 families and 64 speciedhybrids, while 6,825 fishes representing 10 families and 5 1 specieshybrids were captured h r n the tributaries. Tributary species richness ranged firom 24 to 0 concomitant with declining water quality. Members ofthe families Ictaluridae and Cyprinidae dominated mainstream communities, while the Percidae and Cyprinidae were prevalent in its tributaries. Twenty-two species were captured only fiom the Monongahela mainstem, while 1 1 were unique to its tributaries and 39 were cosmopolitan. Overall, the Monongahela Basin ichthyofaunal complement currently numbers 75 specieshybrids.
