Comment on: Efficacy and safety of the eight-chop technique in phacoemulsification for patients with cataract Sato's article on the 8-chop prechop technique is interesting. 1 Akahoshi originally introduced the prechop technique in 1994. 2 Sato says it is "rarely used globally," and while an exaggeration, it is indeed underused.

“…In 2020, the Japanese Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery stated that the prechop technique may only be possible for exceptional surgeons such as Akahoshi. 1 I designed the Eight-chopper I, Eight-chopper II, and Lance-chopper to divide the lens nucleus into 8 sections, as described in my paper. Improvements in size, shape, and sharpness allow for more efficient and safer intraocular manipulation than conventional prechoppers.…”

“…I would also like to stress that there are no inaccuracies in my paper. 2 Only when ophthalmologists truly understand the 8-chop technique, will they be able to perform the Lance-chop technique on grade IV to V lens nuclei. Explanations of the 8-chop technique can be found through the 8-chop channel on YouTube.…”
