Efficacy and Safety of Single-Session Radiofrequency Ablation in Treating Benign Thyroid Nodules: A Short-Term Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Objective. The aims of this study are to evaluate the safety and efficacy of RFA in the treatment of benign thyroid nodule(s) and to find independent factors related to the volume reduction rate of the nodule(s). Materials and Methods. This short-term prospective study from a single medical center was conducted on 93 benign thyroid nodules in 93 patients treated with RFA. Two basic techniques were used: the trans-isthmic approach and moving-shot technique. Clinical and ultrasonography examinations were perform… Show more

“…Meanwhile, nodule shrinkage was also accompanied by improvements in symptoms and cosmesis, and MWA for the treatment of BTNs in this study significantly alleviated the patients’ symptoms and cosmetic problems at the time of the last follow-up. Interestingly, although the previous literature ( 24 28 ) had a shorter follow-up period than our study, we found similar results: the volume reduction rapidly increased in the first 6-12 months, and the symptoms and cosmetic problems improved as the nodule volume decreased.…”

“…In this respect, Kuo et al [ 22 ], investigating 109 nodules in 93 patients, found that the mean VRR was 55.9% six months after RFA. AAs well, Nguyen et al [ 23 ], in a study on 78 benign TNs correspondingly reported the mean VRR of 41.4% and 64.7% and the TSR (VRR > 50%) of 30.8% and 84.6% at the 1- and 3-month follow-ups, respectively.…”

“…According to Lee et al [ 7 ], investigating the determinants (VRR > 50%) of the RFA success on 1619 TNs, RFA was 1.2 times more successful in men than women, but this difference was not statistically significant (OR: 1.427, p = 0.430). Nguyen et al [ 23 ], studying 78 benign TNs via multivariate regression analysis showed no statistically significant relationship between VRR and patient age (β: 0.29, p = 0.135) or gender (β: -16.09, p = 0.17). Considering the discrepancy in these findings, future studies are recommended to explore the relationship between the RFA efficacy and the level of sex hormones.…”

“…Thus, a few studies about the safety and efficacy of RFA for benign thyroid nodules were available and no study demonstrated its efficacy on AFTNs. 23 , 24 Therefore, our study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RFA in the AFTN treatment after 2 years of follow-up and to find the factors related to treatment responses through TSH level and VRR.…”
