Efficacy and safety of heavy silicone oil Densiron 68® in the treatment of complicated retinal detachment with large inferior retinectomy

Abstract: Densiron 68 appeared to be an efficient endotamponade agent in selected retinal detachments treated with large inferior retinectomy. It avoids fluid accumulation under the inferior retina and seems to limit the rate of inferior retinectomy reopening.

“…It is also possible that an increased inflammatory response occurred from additional 360° barrier laser, thus contributing to the observed complications. We cannot draw definite conclusions from these findings from our small series, but together with the series published by Theelen et al [6], Auriol et al [17], and Majid et al [20], it adds to the impression that intraoperative direct exchange of heavy silicone oil with PFDL is associated with greater postoperative complications.…”

“…Other Oxane HD articles have found emulsification in up to 10.5%; with pseudohypopyon being described in one other case series [8]. As for Densiron 68, emulsification was present in up to 23% and was deemed to have low clinical impact in some studies [11,13,14,15,16,17]. However, in the initial series of Sandner and Engelmann [12], emulsification was severe enough in 8% (4 of 48 eyes) to result in pseudohypopyon formation [12].…”
