Efficacy and safety of faecal microbiota transplantation in patients with psoriatic arthritis: protocol for a 6-month, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: IntroductionAn unbalanced intestinal microbiota may mediate activation of the inflammatory pathways seen in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). A randomised, placebo-controlled trial of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) infused into the small intestine of patients with PsA with active peripheral disease who are non-responsive to methotrexate (MTX) treatment will be conducted. The objective is to explore clinical aspects associated with FMT performed in patients with PsA.Methods and analysisThis trial is a randomi… Show more

“…Short‐term side effects of FMT are rare and are limited to abdominal cramps, nausea, bloating, and diarrhea. Many studies emphasize that FMT is safe both in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients . Fortunately, none of the 8 patients in our study had any of these adverse effects at the time they were discharged from hospital.…”

“…In comparison with healthy controls, both psoriasis and PsA group showed lower intestinal flora diversity, especially concerning beneficial taxa, which resembled the dysbiosis observed in the course of IBD . The importance of intestinal flora is yet to be investigated in a randomised, placebo‐controlled trial of faecal microbiota transplantation infused in the small intestine in PsA patients unresponsive to methotrexate treatment …”
