Efficacy and safety of a soft contact lens to control myopia progression

Abstract: Clinical relevance:The control of myopia progression is currently considered an evidence-based therapeutic need. Background: To determine the efficacy and safety of the Esencia lens, a new soft contact lens (SCL) designed to slow down myopia progression in paediatric patients. Methods: This study was a randomised, parallel, double-masked clinical trial. Seventy myopic (−0.50 to −8.75 D) boys and girls, 7-15-years of age, were randomised and allocated to one of two groups: (i) study (n = 36) or (ii) control (n … Show more

“…One study [22] of low added power contact lenses, two [23, 24] of medium added power contact lenses, and six [23-28] of high added power contact lenses were included, yielding nine experimental groups in seven studies. Two studies [25, 27] were conducted in Spain, one in China [24], one in Hong Kong [26], one in the USA [23], one in New Zealand [28], and one in Japan [22]. Anstice and Phillips [28] performed their self-controls and compared interocular imbalances.…”

“…It was conducted on 1,840 children aged between 6 and 18 years. The time length of the follow-ups varied from 12–36 months as follows: Four studies were of 12-months duration ( 42 45 ), seven studies were of 24-months duration ( 22 , 46 51 ), and four studies were of 36-months duration ( 33 , 52 54 ). Four studies were conducted in the United States America ( 48 , 51 , 52 , 54 ).…”

“…Two studies were multi-country studies as follows: The trial from Chamberlain et al was conducted in (Portugal, United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada) and the study of Hasebe et al was carried in China, Japan, and South Korea ( 50 , 53 ). Two studies were carried out in Spain ( 22 , 42 ), five studies were carried out in China ( 44 47 , 49 ) and the rest of the studies were conducted in the following countries: Australia ( 43 ) and Canada ( 55 ). Eight studies used bifocals (BFs), one used novel lens designs that corrected hyperopic defocus partly or fully in the periphery, and the other six used PALs as the intervention.…”

“…An increasing number of people wear soft contact lenses that directly contact to the cornea for a long time to correct mild ametropia. 1,2 Because the cornea is one of the most sensitive tissues in human body, long-term wearing of contact lenses often causes serious problems such as corneal abrasion, erosion, ulcer, bacterial infections, and so on. 3 The major bacterial infection caused during soft contact lens wearing is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which leads to serious keratitis and progressive destruction of the corneal epithelium and stroma.…”
