The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of feed formulation using the design of experiments methodology on the zootechnical performance of the local hen in Burkina Faso. The experimental flock consisted of one hundred (100) 11-day-old chicks of the "Poulet du Faso" breed, randomly divided into ten lots of ten chicks. Ten feed rations resulting from the formulation by the experimental design method were prepared to feed the ten batches of poultry. Feed intake, live weight, average daily gain and feed efficiency were monitored weekly for 9 weeks. At the end of the study, the average daily food consumption varied from 112.30 ± 50.79 to 119.49±52.11g/d, the average live weight of the subjects varied from 1089.53±0.07g to 1660±0.12g. The average daily gain varied from 22.81±2.11g/d to 31.92±2.85g and the consumption index varied from 3.92±1.92 to 5.34±2.68. The dissemination of this information to poultry farmers could improve their production yields and the profitability of their activity.

Le niébé, (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), principale légumineuse cultivée au Burkina Faso, est attaqué par plusieurs agents pathogènes dont les champignons. Parmi ces champignons, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goidanich est responsable de la pourriture charbonneuse qui cause d’importantes pertes de production de 80 à 100%. Ces pertes pourraient être considérablement réduites à travers l’utilisation de variétés résistantes à la maladie. L’objectif de l’étude était de contribuer au renforcement des connaissances de l’agent pathogène de la pourriture charbonneuse du niébé pour une meilleure gestion de la maladie au Burkina Faso. A cet effet, une analyse sanitaire des semences, utilisant la méthode du papier buvard a été effectuée sur 27 échantillons de semences collectés dans 14 localités réparties dans les deux principales zones climatiques de production du niébé. La plupart des échantillons de semences collectés (96,30%) étaient infectés par M. phaseolina. Le champignon a été retrouvé dans les semences à des taux moyens d’infection de 35,25% dans la zone Soudanienne et 27,86% dans la zone Soudano-Sahélienne. Une caractérisation moléculaire préliminaire réalisée sur 51 isolats de Macrophomina a permis d’identifier M. phaseolina comme la principale espèce présente dans les semences de niébé dans les deux zones étudiées. English title: Prevalence of Cowpea Charcoal Rot and Molecular Identification of Three Macrophomina Species in the Sudanian and Sudano-Sahelian Zones of Burkina Faso Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), the main legume crop cultivated in Burkina Faso, is attacked by several pathogens, including fungi. Among these fungi, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goidanich is responsible for charcoal rot and leads to significant production losses ranging from 80 to 100%. These losses could be significantly reduced through the use of disease-resistant varieties. The objective of the study was to contribute to the strengthening of knowledge of the causal agent of cowpea charcoal rot for better management of the disease in Burkina Faso. For this purpose, a seed health analysis, using the blotter paper method. A sanitary analysis was carried out on 27 seed samples collected from 14 localities distributed in the two main climatic zones of cowpea production. Most of the seed samples collected (96.30%) were infected with M. phaseolina. The fungus was found in seeds at average infection rates of 35.25% in the Sudanian zone and 27.86% in the Sudano-Sahelian zone. A preliminary molecular characterization of 51 isolates of Macrophomina lead to identify M. phaseolina as the main species present in cowpea seeds in the two targeted areas.

Cowpea production is hampered by several abiotic and biotic constraints. Parasitic weed Alectra vogelii is a formidable biotic constraint in cowpea production. This study was implemented to determine gene actions involved in cowpea seed size and its resistance to Alectra in order to determine the appropriate breeding approach to develop resistant cowpea varieties to Alectra vogelii. For this purpose, a half diallel of 9 parents was developed at Kamboinse in 2016. The F 1 and their parents were screened in screen house with Alectra vogelii seed collected from Alectra infested field in Koupela in centre east Burkina Faso. Data were collected on dates to cowpea flowering, cowpea hundred seeds weight and the severity of Alectra 70 days after planting and analysed with Diall 98 software. Both additive and non-additive gene actions were operative for the investigated characters. Additive gene effects were more important, resulting in high narrow sense heritability, inferring that breeding progress can be achieved through backcross or single seed descent method.
