The objective of this study was to determine the availability and the use of Piliostigma thonningii pods through individual interviews using semi-structured questionnaires, and to evaluate the effect of diet incorporating these pods on growth and parasitic status of goats. The trial consisted in feeding diets to 12 adult West African dwarf goats, divided into three batches of four animals each. Batches 1 and 2 received a diet with 40% Piliostigma thonningii pods, and bamboo charcoal as a zootechnical additive (1g/kg PV) in the diet of batch 2. For batch 3, the animals received a diet without the pods, proportionally replaced by cotton seed cake. The experiment lasted for 78 days including two weeks of adaptation. The Mac-Master technique was used for identification and enumeration of strongyle eggs and coccidia oocysts. The results showed a higher frequency of the use of pods in shredded form (38.18%) compared to crushed (25.45%) and whole (20.00%). The availability of pods was confirmed by 57.1% of the respondents. The ADG obtained with the batches fed diet incorporating the pods were 16.39±4.10 and 24.01±5.97 g/d for batches 1 and 2 respectively, significantly lower than those obtained with the animals in batch 3 that received the cotton seed cake (31.39±5.80 g/d). The level of EPG recorded in animals from batch 1 (50±100) was significantly lower than those obtained with animals from batches 2 and lot 3 (500±455 and 925±736 respectively). The use of Piliostigma thonningii pods could be of great use in goat intensive production improvement programs.

L’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer la digestibilité des ressources alimentaires utilisées dans l’alimentation des ruminants en zone semi-aride du Cameroun. Ces ressources alimentaires ont été collectées dans les élevages de bovin puis ramenées au laboratoire. Après séchage à l’étuve, elles ont été broyées, tamisées puis conservées dans des bocaux hermétiquement fermés. Chaque substrat ainsi préparé a été soumis à l’évaluation de la digestibilité in vitro. Après 24 heures d’incubation, les sons de maïs et de sorgho ont produit plus de gaz (p ˂ 0,05) avec respectivement 250,20 ± 10,48 ml/gMS et 245,26 ± 2,83 ml/gMS par rapport aux autres substrats. Le son de maïs présente un taux de digestibilité de la matière organique le plus élevé de 62,57%. Il est suivi des fanes de niébé et d’arachide avec respectivement des taux de digestibilité de 61,38% et 61,16%. La masse microbienne produite après 24 heures d’incubation, donne un classement des substrats autre que la teneur en énergie métabolisable et la production des acides gras volatils. Après le son de sorgho, le son de riz a été le deuxième substrat en termes de masse microbienne produite avec respectivement 312,57 mg et 258,57 mg. Ces données mises à la disposition des éleveurs peuvent faciliter l’utilisation rationnelle des ressources alimentaires, ce qui pourrait améliorer la productivité des ruminants en zone semi-aride du Cameroun. The objective of this study was to determine the digestibility of the food resources used in the ruminants feeding in the semi-arid zone of Cameroon. The food resources were collected from cattle farms and then taken to the laboratory. After drying in the oven, these resources were crushed, sieved and then stored in tightly closed jars. Each substrate prepared was subjected to the In vitro digestibility evaluation. After 24 hours of incubation, the maize and sorghum bran produced more gas (p ˂ 0.05) with respectively 250.20 ± 10.48 ml / gDM and 245.26 ± 2.83 ml/gDM compared to other substrates. With regard to organic matter, corn bran was the most digestible substrate with 62.57%, followed by cowpea and peanut fades with 61.38% and 61.16% respectively. The classification of substrates obtained from the microbial mass produced after 24 hours of incubation differs from that obtained from the metabolizable energy. After the sorghum bran, rice bran is the second substrate in terms of microbial mass produced with 312.57 mg and 258.57 mg respectively. Access to these data can facilitate the rational use of locally available food resources. This could improve the productivity of ruminants in the semi-arid zone of Cameroon.

The assessment of the effects of spirulina incorporation on ingestion and in vivo digestibility of rice straw was conducted at the Application and Research Farm and at the Animal Nutrition and Feeding Laboratory of Dschang University. The rations were distributed in a completely randomized design comprising three groups of three West African dwarf goats and three groups of three sheeps aged between 18 and 24 months. These animals were housed individually in digestibility cages. Periods of adaptation and data collection were 8 and 6 days, respectively. Each animal received 700g of rice straw per day with 0% spirulina (RS5 + S0) for group 1; 5% spirulina (RS5 + S5) for group 2 and 10% spirulina for group 3 (RS5 + S10). The leftover of each group was evaluated every morning before serving the new ration. A sample of 100g of each ration, faeces and 10 ml of urine was collected for the purpose of carrying out bromatological analyzes and the evaluation of digestibility. The results of this study showed that the addition of spirulina increased digestibility of organic matter and digestible nitrogenous matter of rice straw. The addition of spirulina did not significantly (P> 0.05) influence ingestion of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and cell walls (NDF) in goats. However, the highest intake of DM, OM and cell walls (NDF) was obtained with RS5 + S10 ration (673.06; 541.40; 481.91g DM / day) and the lowest with RS5 + S0 (561.19; 480.61; 457.65g DM / day). On the other hand, in sheep, the addition of Spirulina significantly (P<0.05) influenced intake of rations. Dry matter (DM) intake of RS5 + S0 diet (566.20g DM/day) was comparable (P>0.05) to that of the RS5 + S5 diet (570.39 g DM/day), but significantly (P<0.05) lower than RS5 + S10 diet (603.76g DM/day). The addition of spirulina to rice straw associated with molasses resulted to the best digestive utilization coefficients of DM, OM, cell walls (NDF) and nitrogen in West African dwarf goats. On the other hand, in sheep, the best digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, cell walls and nitrogen were obtained with RS5 + S10 ration. The addition of spirulina to rice straw improved apparent digestibility of nitrogen (P>0.05) in Djallonke ewes. On the other hand, it improved significantly (P<0.05) the apparent digestibility of nitrogen in dwarf goats
