Effects of α‐tocopherol on the early phase of osteoporotic fracture healing

Abstract: Fracture healing is a complex process, which is more complicated if the bone is osteoporotic. One of the vitamin E isomers, a-tocopherol, has been found to prevent osteoporosis and improve bone fracture healing but its role in the healing of osteoporotic fractures is still unclear. We carried out a study on the effects of a-tocopherol supplementation on osteoporotic fracture healing using an ovariectomized rat model, whereby we focused on the early phase of fracture healing, that is, the phase with excessive p… Show more

“…Muhammed et al [3] also suggested that treatment of ovariectomized rats with either 60 mg/kg alphatocopherol or 60 mg/kg tocotrienol prevented the reduction in trabecular number and bone volume and prevented the increase in trabecular separation. Shuid et al [4] suggested that alphatocopherol improved fracture healing but had no effect on callous volume and radiological staging of callous formation in ovariectomized rats.…”

“…LA has also beneficial effects in the maintenance of a healthy bone structure in rat ovariectomy and inflammation-mediated osteoporosis (60). Other data demonstrate that the administration of vitamin E is able to maintain bone mineral density in elderly men (39), and it promotes healing of osteoporotic fracture in ovariectomized rats inducing the bone regeneration (61). However, few studies have been performed on the direct action of antioxidants on bone cell activity.…”
