“…Some studies have shown a negative impact of heavy metals on pollinator survival and reproduction, especially for butterflies (e.g. Nieminen et al ., ; Noret et al ., ; Shu et al ., ), but other studies suggest a lack of such an influence (Kevan, ; van Rossum et al ., ; Szentgyörgyi et al ., ). Evidence linking decreased survival of bees and heavy metals comes from laboratory‐based toxicity tests performed on the honey bee, Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae), (Leita et al ., ) and contamination of honey bee products (Bogdanov, ).…”

“…across the cuticle, via spiracles or ingestion) can result in changes to the cellular ultrastructure and genetics of the insect; for example, expression of Vg mRNA was found to be downregulated and the accumulation of Vn in eggs reduced in response to metal pollution [18]. Shu also showed that high levels of Zn reduced the expression of Vg in Spodoptera litura and negatively affected its reproduction [39]. Gene expression profiles of insect can be used to distinguish different responses to toxins such as metals.…”

“…Five hundred milligrams of samples (dry weight) were digested in 10 ml of boiling nitric acid (65%) and 1 ml concentrated perchloric acid (BAKER ANALYZED reagent; Baker, Deventer, Holland) [39], [40]. When the fume was white and the solution was completely clear, the samples were cooled to room temperature.…”

“…Pandal et al, (1975) and Panda (1976) reported the antagonistic effect of zinc against yellow stem borer which resulted due to induced antibiosis effect of zinc and developing of hard pseudostem. Shu et al, (2009) reported excess Zn made expression of vitellogenin gene down regulated and caused poor accumulation of egg yolk, which led to reduction in egg numbers and failure of eggs to hatch. Thus, the present findings derived ample support from the finding of above workers, so far the dead heart and white ear head was concerned.…”
