Effects of xylooligosaccharide-sugar mixture on glycemic index (GI) and blood glucose response in healthy adults

Abstract: Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of xyloologosaccharide (XOS)-sugar mixture on glycemic index (GI) and blood glucose in human subjects. Methods: Randomized double-blind cross-over studies were conducted to examine the effect of sucrose with 14% xyloologosaccharide powder ( KEY WORDS: xylooligosaccharide (XOS), sugar, GI (glycemic index), area under the curve (AUC), blood glucose.

“…Like XOS, minor side-effects such as flatulence, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea limit the daily intake allowance of XB to 0.7-7.5 g [18]. Thus, considering their low relative sweetness value, the application of XB or XOS to a food system as a single-compound sweetener is not feasible as the required quantity will easily exceed the daily allowance limit.…”

“…As a type of functional oligosaccharide, XOS has attracted much attention due to its unique physiological properties. It was demonstrated in a number of studies that XOS can promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria [ 7 ], strengthen immunity [ 8 ], prevent constipation, and lower serum cholesterol [ 9 ] among other benefits. In 2018, the European Union officially approved XOS as a new food additive.…”
