SummaryAlgorithmic evaluations are becoming increasingly common among app‐workers. However, there is limited research on how app‐workers' perceptions of these evaluations (perceived algorithmic evaluation, or PAE) affect service performance. Our study addresses this gap in three ways: first, we introduce a new method to measure PAE among app‐workers. Second, building on flow theory, we explore how app‐workers' flow experience mediates the relationship between PAE and service performance. Third, by integrating the conservation of resources theory and flow theory, we examine how viability challenges might reduce the positive impact of PAE on app‐workers' flow experience. Using both interviews and surveys, our research reveals that PAE positively influences app‐workers' flow experience and, in turn, their service performance. Notably, we find that when workers face more viability challenges, the positive effects of PAE on their flow experience and service performance decrease. Our findings highlight the importance of algorithmic evaluation in shaping app‐workers' work experiences and outcomes in the gig economy and have significant theoretical and practical implications.

Background Burnout is common in professions such as medicine in which employees have frequent and often stressful interpersonal interactions where empathy and emotional control are important. Burnout can lead to decreased effectiveness at work, negative health outcomes, and less job satisfaction. A relationship between burnout and job satisfaction is established for several types of physicians but is less studied among surgeons who treat musculoskeletal conditions. Emotions are central to contemporary theories of health, and a growing body of psychological research has shown emotion and emotion regulatory styles to be predictive of health outcomes. Yet despite these clear links and the fact that patterns of emotion and expression are partially a product of culture, there is a meager literature on the emotional characteristics of different ethnic groups. Even where ethnicity has been investigated in emotions research, it has typically been operationalized in such a way that within-group differences are obscured with most individuals assigned to broad ethnic categories, such as non-Hispanic White, or Black. In the present study we draw on data from a multi-ethnic sample of 755 community-dwelling older adults to parse a picture of the emotional characteristics of three of the largest and most culturally distinct ethnic groups in the Northeastern United States: African Americans, West Indians (Jamaicans), and Eastern Slavs (Russians and Ukrainians) from the former Soviet Republic, as well as a comparison group of US-born European Americans. As predicted, there were striking differences in nine of 10 trait emotions as well as in levels of emotion expressed during conflict. The findings are discussed in terms of emotion socialization and implications for prediction and intervention in psychosocial models of emotions, emotion regulation, and health in older ethnic populations.
