Effects of Work and Lifestyle on Risk for Future Disability Pension Due to Low Back Diagnoses

Abstract: The factors shared by family members seemed to influence both work and lifestyle factors, which then influenced the incidence of DP due to LBDs.

“…In previous studies, unemployment has been a predictor for higher risk of DP due to rheumatoid arthritis (11), DP due to low-back diagnoses (15), and limited work capacity (28), but no such association was found for short-term unemployment and DP due to musculoskeletal diagnoses (29). Our finding is pronounced as we used the selection criterion of being at work at baseline and despite the fact that criterion changes of workplace and unemployment prior to baseline in 1975 were significant factors for future DP.…”

“…These familial factors (that is both genetics and shared environment mainly in childhood) may therefore confound some observed epidemiological associations since these familial effects may influence the characteristics influencing DP due to musculoskeletal diagnoses. Until now, most previous studies have investigated work-related risk factors for chronic conditions, or if DP has been involved, with relatively short follow-up time (3,6,14,15). However, studies with a life-course perspective would be needed if one wished to investigate work-related factors during life stages as identification of work-related risk factors would facilitate prevention of exposures and diagnoses leading to DP.…”

“…intrauterine and rearing, this is possible [56]. There are some studies of Nordic twin cohorts which have investigated the direct associations of health behaviors with DP [28,57-59]. However, none of these focused specifically on DP due to mental diagnoses.…”

“…Factors found to be important predictors of sick leave and disability pension due to MSD are employment and social relations [53], stress and workload [54, 55], lifestyle and work factors [56], emotional stability and personality [57]. Future studies will investigate interactions between patient related factors and organisational factors in order to gain further knowledge on successful rehabilitation and return to work.…”
