Effects of Wolbachia in the uzifly, Exorista sorbillans, a parasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Abstract: The uzifly, Exorista sorbillans (Diptera: Tachinidae), a parasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), harbours Wolbachia (Rickettsia) endosymbionts. Administration of 0.05 mg/ml oxytetracycline to the adult uziflies removed Wolbachia endosymbionts and resulted in different reproductive disorders, such as i) reduction in fecundity of uninfected females, ii) cytoplasmic incompatibility in crosses between infected males and uninfected females, iii) sterility in the crosses between both ma… Show more

“…2010; Zhong and Li 2013). Although we find the effect driven by sires, previous work shows support for a dam effect (Puttaraju and Prakash 2005; Zhong and Li 2013), which was interpreted as resulting from Wolbachia-mediated cytoplasmic incompatibility.…”

“…This bias toward increased relative production of males following tetracycline treatment is consistent with previous results, which consistently show an excess of males produced following tetracycline-induced symbiont depletion (Costa et al. 1997; Puttaraju and Prakash 2005; Miller et al. 2010; Zhong and Li 2013).…”

“…On the other hand, results clearly revealed the existence of a strong direct benefit of Wolbachia infection for females as previously described (Puttaraju and Prakash 2005). The infected females' fecundity (number of eggs laid) and the viability of their eggs (the hatching rate) are significantly higher than that of cured females.…”

“…[Werren, 1997 andWerren et al, 2008 for a review]. It has also been noted that the endosymbiont-host combination is sometimes essential for the successful development of the host's germ cells [Puttaraju and Prakash, 2009]. It seems clear that for Wolbachia , the germline of its host is more than a channel to its dispersion and also that Wolbachia 's manipulation of its host's reproduction involves cytogenetic changes affecting chromosomes and chromatin.…”
