Effects of WO 3 Particle Size in WO 3 /Epoxy Resin Radiation Shielding Material

Abstract: To verify the influence of the functional elements particular size for the radiation attenuation coefficients and mechanical properties radiation shielding material based on epoxy resin, we prepare two WO3/E44 samples with different particular sizes of WO3 by a solidified forming approach. The linear attenuation coefficients of these samples are measured for γ-ray photo energies of 59.6, 121.8, and 344.1 keV, etc. using narrow beam transmission geometry. It is found that the linear attenuation coefficients wou… Show more

“…Several polymers such as polyethylene 1,2 , recycled polyethylene 3 , epoxy 4 , polyester 5 , styrene butadiene rubber 6 , ethylene-propylene-dine monomer (EPDM) 7 , polyimide 8 , natural rubber 9 and polystyrene 10 were investigated as a nuclear protective matrixes. Metal oxides like PbO 5 , PbWO 4 7 , Sm 2 O 3 8 , WO 3 11 , Bi 2 O 3 12 and Gd 2 O 3 13 have been used as fillers in the polymer matrix to provide radiation shield for use against X-rays and γ-rays.…”

“…Recently, studies were conducted on WO 3 /Epoxy composites in the presence of low-energy X-ray sources through simulation and experiment, and the effects of WO 3 particle size was also investigated. In this research, in addition to reaching a good agreement between experimental and simulated data, the higher attenuation of the nanocomposite was reported [27,28]. However, in other studies at higher energy spectrum, the researchers had only attempted to explore the absorption and attenuation properties of the relative composites via simulation.…”

“…It is because boric acid not only take the role as boron source for the product, but also as template for the 2D structure during the synthesis process. Therefore, these results indicate that Pb 3 B 10 O 16 [OH] 4 single crystal nanosheets have been synthesized successfully. It indicates the sheets are extremely thin and reaches the nanoscale size with the range from 20 to 100 nm.…”

“…Figure 2b provides the EDS analysis of the product. [15][16][17] Hence, n-sheet possesses a good ability to attenuate gamma. The atomic ratio of Pb:B:O is about 1:3.37:7.12, which is close to the theoretical ratio of 1:3.33:6.67 for the product.…”
