“…The diets used in the study of Banfield and Forbes (2001) contained 200 g/kg of maize and it has been reported that maize-based diets reacted less severely to Eimeria infection than wheat-based diets (Williams, 1992). The current results, however, agree with those of Banfield et al (1999) and Gabriel et al (2003b) who found that feeding WW to birds increased coccidia development following challenge with E. acervulina and E. tenella as shown by higher oocyst count compared to GW fed birds. The discrepancy between different studies may be attributed, in part, to several factors including the duration of oocyst output measurements, cereal type (maize or wheat), inclusion rate and age of birds.…”

“…This increase in gizzard size is in response to the need to do more grinding to process the whole grains before digestion in the lower parts of the GI tract. Other studies (Banfield et al, 1999;Banfield and Forbes, 2001) have also demonstrated that the inclusion of whole wheat had no significant effect on control of coccidial infections.…”

“…Coccidiosis is one of those diseases that poses a considerable economic loss to broiler industry, with being one of the most prevalent species in India causing caecal or bloody type of coccidiosis associated with reduced growth rate, poor performance and mortality in broiler chickens [2]. The disease is responsible for 6-10% of all mortality in broilers [3] and in India, 95.61% (INR 1089.17 million) of the total economic loss occurs due to the disease.…”
