The study aimed to test the effectiveness of ambon banana stems flour through feeding on the health status and performance of the groupers reared in the sea floating net cages. The groupers (8.27 ± 0.20 cm length and 11.69 ± 0.50 g weight) were reared in 1 m × 1 m × 1.5 m floating net cages with a stocking density of 112 fish /m3 for 42 days. The feed was commercial feed with 46% and 48% protein, which was added with 30 g/kg of ambon banana stems flour with a coating method. This study consists of three treatments and three replications, i.e. feeding at the beginning of reared for 7 days (A), 14 days (B), and feeding without ambon banana stems flour (control). The observed parameters were production performance, morphometric, hematological test, and water quality. The results showed that the production performance between treatments was not significantly different (P>0.05). Based on the morphometric test the total length for treatment A increased significantly (P <0.05) compared to the control and B. On the 14th day of the hematological test, it was known that the highest total erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and total leukocyte was found in treatment B, however, the differential leukocyte did not differ significantly (P>0.05). The addition of Ambon banana stems flour in feed in the first 14 days (B) can improve health status but has not been able to increase production performance and morphometric grouper. Keywords: cantang grouper fish, production performance, health status, Ambon banana stems flour ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguji efektivitas tepung batang pisang ambon dalam pakan terhadap status kesehatan dan kinerja produksi ikan kerapu cantang yang didederkan dalam KJA di laut. Ikan kerapu cantang berukuran 8.27 ± 0.20 cm dengan bobot rata-rata 11.69 ± 0.50 g dipelihara dalam KJA berukuran 1 m × 1 m × 1.5 m (kedalaman air 2,5 m) dengan kepadatan 112 ekor/m2 dan dipelihara selama 42 hari. Pakan yang digunakan adalah pakan komersil dengan protein 46% dan 48%, yang selanjutnya ditambahkan tepung batang pisang ambon sebanyak 30 g/kg pakan dengan metode coating. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga perlakuan dan tiga ulangan yakni pemberian pakan perlakuan di awal pemeliharaan selama 7 hari (A), 14 hari (B) dan tanpa pemberian pakan dengan tepung batang pisang ambon (kontrol). Parameter yang diamati adalah kinerja produksi, morfometrik, uji hematologi dan pengukuran kualitas air. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kinerja produksi antar perlakuan tidak berbeda signifikan (P>0.05). Berdasarkan pada uji morfometrik pada bagian panjang total untuk perlakuan A ditemukan peningkatan signifikan (P<0.05) dibandingkan perlakuan kontrol dan B. Pada uji hematologi hari ke-14 diketahui total eritrosit, hemoglobin, hematokrit dan total leukosit tertinggi terdapat pada perlakuan B, sedangkan nilai diferensial leukosit antar perlakuan tidak berbeda signifikan (P>0.05). Penambahan tepung batang pisang ambon dalam pakan pada 14 hari pertama pemeliharaan (B) dapat meningkatkan status kesehatan, namun belum mampu meningkatkan kinerja produksi dan morfometrik ikan kerapu. In the past decade, different groups of additives (probiotics, oligosaccharides, and plant extracts) have been widely researched and used in worldwide aquaculture. Recently, other groups, such as biopolymers (e.g., poly‐β‐hydroxybutyrate) with prebiotic properties, have been investigated. Among biopolymers, the use of pure polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA; composition = 95–100%) as a feed additive in aquaculture has not been studied yet. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to research the effects of four supplementation levels of pure PHA on growth, survival, feed and nutrient utilization, apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs), and hematology of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were designed, including a control (C) diet without PHA supplementation. Remaining diets were supplemented with the following levels of PHA: PHA 0.1% (basal diet + 0.1% PHA), PHA 0.5% (basal diet + 0.5% PHA), PHA 1.0% (basal diet + 1.0% PHA), and PHA 2.0% (basal diet + 2.0% PHA). After a 70‐d feeding test period, the PHA 0.5% and PHA 1.0% experimental groups showed significantly higher final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, lipid efficiency and productive value, and ADCs of lipid and energy compared to those of the C group. Protein efficiency ratio was significantly higher in fish fed the PHA 0.1%, PHA 0.5%, and PHA 1.0% diets compared to the C group. Protein productive value significantly increased in the PHA 1.0% group. The ADC of protein was significantly higher in fish fed diets supplemented with any level of PHA compared to C fish. Regarding hematological parameters, hematocrit value showed a significant increase in fish fed PHA 0.1% compared to the C group. Leukocyte composition (%) did not show significant differences among experimental groups. Based on polynomial regression analysis, the optimum inclusion levels of PHA in Nile Tilapia diets were 0.82–0.92% for growth performance, 1.0–1.1% for nutrient utilization, 1.0–1.2% for ADCs, and 1.34% for hematocrit. Cost–benefit ratio analysis revealed nonsignificant but numerical differences among experimental diets. Results suggest that pure PHA, when supplemented at 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0%, has certain positive effects on growth, nutrient and feed utilization, and ADCs without compromising Nile Tilapia hematology or health.

The aquaculture sector is steadily growing due to the increasing demand for healthy and cheap animal protein sources. Consequently, the high demand for nutritionally balanced aquafeed increases, but requires sustainable and feasible feed ingredients. However, the high cost of fish and soybean meals opens the door to looking for suitable non‐traditional feed ingredients. The processing of fruits results in high amounts of waste and by‐products, which are risky for the environment but rich in nutritional value. Recycling fruit waste in aquafeed is successfully applied and results in high growth performance, productivity and well‐being of aquatic animals. Fruit by‐products are also potential functional feed additives devoted to their high content of polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides and peptides. As functional components, fruit by‐products enhance the antioxidative and immune responses of aquatic animals and increase their tolerance for biotic and abiotic stressors. In light of reducing antimicrobial chemicals in aquaculture to mitigate antimicrobial resistance, dietary feed additives extracted from fruit by‐products can be used as eco‐friendly substances. The investigations involved in evaluating the incorporation of fruit by‐products and their derivatives in aquafeeds are explored in this review. An overview of the possibility of using non‐traditional plant products in aquaculture as a feasible and sustainable concept is addressed in this review. Academic knowledge with enough information for more development and research to maximise the utilisation of fruit by‐products in the aquafeed industry is also enriched.
