Effects of Weight-Bearing Biofeedback Training on Functional Movement Patterns Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVES Examine the effects of weight-bearing (WB) biofeedback training on WB symmetry and functional joint moments following unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). BACKGROUND Individuals post unilateral TKA place more weight on the non-surgical limb compared to the surgical limb during function. It is unknown if targeted intervention can improve surgical limb use and resolve altered movement patterns. METHODS Twenty-six patients were randomized to 2 groups… Show more

“…The methodological quality of the analysed research rated on the PEDro scale ranged from moderate quality—4 points [ 22 , 29 ]—to high quality—8 points [ 24 ]—with a mean score of 5.9 points (moderate quality). Four studies were high quality above 7 points on the PEDro scale [ 22 , 23 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…In most physiotherapy research, blinding is difficult due to the specifics of carrying out interventions. However, blinding all test assessors is possible and should be used in RCT, which concerned about half of the included studies [ 23 , 24 , 26 , 28 , 30 ]. The highest quality in evidence-based medicine and evidence-based practice is obtained by randomized double-blind or triple-blind control trials.…”

“…As shown in Table 3 , function was significantly improved by perioperative interventions in 18 studies. Pain coping skills training [ 62 ], audiorecording guided imagery scripts [ 61 ], video promoting self-confidence and psychological support [ 64 ], music [ 35 , 36 ], occupational therapy in combination with self-monitoring using a diary [ 68 ], various types of education [ 41 , 43 , 45 , 47 , 51 53 ], weight-bearing biofeedback training [ 67 ], and psychological therapies (behavioural change intervention [ 60 ] and cognitive behavioural therapy [ 57 – 59 ]) positively affected any, but not all, of the functional outcome measures after TKA. In the most recent study by Riddle et al [ 63 ], patients receiving pain coping skills training did not have significantly better scores on WOMAC function and the short physical performance battery.…”

“…Real-time biofeedback applied in people with various knee joint pathologies have almost exclusively focused on augmenting peak vGRF (Zeni Jr et al, 2013;Christiansen et al, 2015;Luc-Harkey et al, 2018a;Luc-Harkey et al, 2018b). Both vGRF and pKEM biofeedback encourage individual participants to systematically manipulate their gait patterns, for example to optimize joint loading relevant to OA development.…”
