Effects of water glass and DMDHEU treatment on the colonisation of wood by Aureobasidium pullulans

Abstract: Specimens of Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) were treated with a sodium water glass solution and 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU).The pH-values of water glass treated specimens were between 9.7 and 12.0. Those of DMDHEU treated specimens were 3.8 (Scots pine) and 4.2 (beech). The resistance observed in an eight weeks laboratory test against the blue stain fungus Aureobasidium pullulans showed that treatments with water glass and DMDHEU reduced but not prevente… Show more

“…Siloxanes (e.g. methyl-or propyltriethoxysilane) have been of interest due to easy applicability via the sol-gel process and on account of the attained improvement in substrate properties, such as increased hydrophobization and fungal resistance (Mai and Militz 2004;Donath et al 2006a,b;Weigenand et al 2008; Van den Bulcke et al 2010;Pfeffer et al 2011;Baur and Easteal 2012;Ghosh et al 2012a,b;Pries et al 2012). Inorganic silicon compounds, such as salts of hexafluorosilicic acid, water glasses, or silicic acid gels, have been tested as well (Mai and Militz 2004;Pfeffer et al 2011).…”

“…The impregnation solutions were selected focusing on environmentally nontoxic agents with different compositions. The selected solutions have previously been found to give improved wood properties (Hansmann et al 2006, Temiz et al 2008, Ghosh et al 2009, Pfeffer et al 2010. The major motivation for this study was enhancement of the mechanical properties of heat-treated wood.…”

“…It is also possible that Levasil 200S inhibits the penetration of fungal hyphae through the wood specimens. Similar tests of water glass-treated specimens revealed high resistance to staining, which was attributed to the high alkalinity (pH 10 -12) of the specimens (Pfeffer et al 2011 ). Strong reduction of blue stain colonization was also observed with wood treated with amino siloxane (Ghosh et al 2009 ).…”
