Effects of visually demanding near work on trapezius muscle activity

Abstract: Poor visual ergonomics is associated with visual and neck/shoulder discomfort, but the relation between visual demands and neck/shoulder muscle activity is unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate whether trapezius muscle activity was affected by: (i) eye-lens accommodation; (ii) incongruence between accommodation and convergence; and (iii) presence of neck/shoulder discomfort. Sixty-six participants (33 controls and 33 with neck pain) performed visually demanding near work under four different tria… Show more

“…Symptoms may include blurred vision, reading problems, headache, diplopia, and in many cases, difficulty in maintaining comfortable vision for a long time . Also, these visual disorders are associated with musculoskeletal discomfort in the neck and shoulder . Although the two conditions are usually studied independently, there are indications that they can be physiologically related .…”

“…Also, these visual disorders are associated with musculoskeletal discomfort in the neck and shoulder . Although the two conditions are usually studied independently, there are indications that they can be physiologically related . It is important to note that the computer vision syndrome (64–90% prevalence) is a term that encompasses one or more symptoms in the visual system, neck, and shoulder.…”

“…The specific aim was to investigate if an increase in ciliary muscle contraction force leads to a proportional and individualized increase in the level of trapezius muscle activity. These studies were the first to measure eye accommodation objectively and continuously while simultaneously measuring trapezius muscle activity . The limitations of those studies have been addressed in a recent study by Domkin et al .…”

“…A relation has been shown between poor working posture and musculoskeletal disorders, stress, and discomfort [9][10][11][12]. When working positions are not optimal, visual requirements have a greater influence on working posture than manual or bodily requirements [13][14][15][16][17].…”
