A ten-week investigation was undertaken to assess the incorporation of Hevea brasilliensis seed meal (RSM) as an alternative to soyabean meal (SBM) in rabbits' feed. Sixty kit rabbits were distributed at random to four treatments diets and five rabbits / replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The diets consist of a control diet (0% RSM) as well as three experimental diets, containing 25%, 50% and 75% RSM. Results showed that RSM affected (P < 0.05) the rabbits' blood profile and performance. The weight gain was similar (P > 0.05) up to 50% SBM replacement, while feed conversion ratio (FCR) were similar (P > 0.05) across the replacement levels. The highest weight gain and best FCR were observed in diets containing 50% and 25% RSM respectively. The highest values of packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), white blood cells (WBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), were noted in Diet 4 (75% RSM). The total protein increased with an increased level of RSM in the diet, while as RSM in the diet increased, the liver enzymes dropped. . In conclusion, RSM could effectively replace 50% SBM as protein ingredient in growing rabbits' diets.

The on-farm attempt to cut down feed costs through bulk fortification of standard animal feed with available cheap conventional feed ingredients or wastes had been a normal practice without a known empirical impact on livestock health and wellbeing. Therefore, this study determined the haematological parameters and serum biochemistry of pigs fed cocoa (Theobroma cacao) seed testa at varying inclusion levels in the formulated standard grower pig feed; T1:0% CST, T2:25% CST, T3:50% CST, T4:75% CST and T5:100% CST. Thirty (30) 8-week-old pigs were randomly assigned to the five treatments of six pigs each and replicated thrice, with two pigs per replicate in a completely randomised design (CRD). The experiment lasted for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, blood samples were collected randomly from three pigs per treatment through the jugular vein using hypodermic needle and syringe for haematological analysis and serum biochemistry. This study recorded significant differences (P<0.05) in most of the haematological parameters, except for white blood cell (WBC), platelet and heterophils; apart from high-density lipoprotein, all serum biochemical indices were also significantly different (P<0.05). Haematological parameters and serum indices were within the normal range for the healthy pig, except for lymphocytes. However, based on the results of the haematological indices and the serum biochemical parameters, it could be concluded that cocoa seed testa at the 25% inclusion level in the standard grower pig feed had the optimum support for the wellbeing and healthy performance of pigs.

Inclusion of Cocoa Bean Shell in the Diet of Dairy Goats: Effects on Milk Production Performance and Milk Fatty Acid Profile

The use of agro-industrial by-products in animal nutrition is a promising strategy to reduce the food-feed competition, the diet cost at farm level and the environmental impact of animal-derived food production. In this study, the suitability of cocoa bean shell (CBS), a by-product of the cocoa industry, as a feed ingredient in the diet of dairy goats was evaluated, with a focus on the related implications on feed intake, milk yield, milk main constituents, and fatty acid (FA) profile of milk fat. Twenty-two Camosciata delle Alpi goats were divided into two balanced groups. All the goats were fed mixed hay ad libitum. The control group (CTRL; n = 11) also received 1.20 kg/head × day of a commercial concentrate, while in the experimental group (CBS; n = 11) 200 g of the CTRL concentrate were replaced by the same amount of pelleted CBS. The total dry matter intake of the goats was reduced by the dietary inclusion of CBS (P ≤ 0.01). The milk yield, as well as the milk fat, protein, and casein contents and yields were unaffected by the treatment. Milk from the CBS-fed goats showed decreased urea content when compared to the CTRL group (P ≤ 0.001). Milk from the CBS group of goats also showed increased concentrations of total branched-chain FA (both iso and anteiso forms; P ≤ 0.001) and total monounsaturated FA (P ≤ 0.05), as well as a decreased ∑ n6/∑ n3 FA ratio (P ≤ 0.05). De novo saturated FA, total polyunsaturated FA, total conjugated linoleic acids, and the majority of ruminal biohydrogenation intermediates remained unaffected by the dietary treatment. These results suggest that CBS can be strategically used as an alternative non-conventional raw material in diets intended for lactating goats, with no detrimental effects on their milk production performance. The use of CBS in goat nutrition may be hindered by the presence of theobromine, a toxic alkaloid. Special attention is needed by nutritionists to avoid exceeding the theobromine limits imposed by the current legislation. Detheobromination treatments are also suggested in literature to prevent toxic phenomena.
