Effects of Various Plant Growth Regulators on the Traffic Tolerance of ‘Riviera’ Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.)

Abstract: Data describing effects of plant growth regulator (PGR) applications on bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) traffic tolerance are limited. A 2-year study was conducted evaluating effects of several PGRs on ‘Riviera’ bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) traffic tolerance. Treatments included 1) ethephon at 3.8 kg·ha−1; 2) trinexapac-ethyl (TE) at 0.096 kg·ha−1; 3) paclobutrazol at 0.28 kg·ha−1; 4) … Show more

“…Baker et al (1999) reported increased bahiagrass color 12 wk after treatment with imazapic during yr 1 of a 3-yr study in Florida. Trinexapac-ethyl also has been shown to increase concentrations of chlorophyll a and b in 'TifEagle' hybrid bermudagrass (McCullough et al 2004) and the overall color of Riviera bermudagrass (Brosnan et al 2010). In the current study, RCI values for trinexapac-ethyl at 35 DAT in both May and June were 111% of the untreated control as well ( Table 5).…”

“…A score greater than or equal to 6 was considered acceptable for turfgrass color. Other researchers have used these methods in studies evaluating bermudagrass traffic tolerance (Brosnan et al, 2010)…”

“…Treatments received ~12 mm of irrigation after application each year with all plots irrigated to sustain active growth thereafter. Similar to Brosnan et al (1), plots were subjected to 15 simulated traffic events (i.e., 3 events per week) with a CADY traffic simulator. Traffic was initiated 2 and 7 weeks after herbicide application in 2009 and 2010, respectively.…”

“…Plots were subjected to 15 simulated traffic events (3 events per week) using the CADY traffic simulator beginning on 4 May 2011. Traffic tolerance and recovery were quantified by measuring turfgrass coverage using digital image analysis similar to Brosnan et al (1). Experimental design was a randomized complete block with six replications.…”
