Effects of vaccination, new SARS-CoV-2 variants and reinfections on post-COVID-19 complications

Abstract: Post-COVID-19 complications involve a variety of long-lasting health complications emerging in various body systems. Since the prevalence of post-COVID-19 complications ranges from 8–47% in COVID-19 survivors, it represents a formidable challenge to COVID-19 survivors and the health care system. Post-COVID-19 complications have already been studied in the connection to risk factors linked to their higher probability of occurrence and higher severity, potential mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of post-COV… Show more

“…That’s why, it is hypothesized that COVID-19 vaccination might help reset the immune system, reduce the exaggerated inflammatory response, and eradicate the viral reservoir [ 19 ]. Another theory is the proven significant prevention of complications caused by secondary pathological processes related to SARS-CoV2 infection itself, e.g., organ/systemic derangements, depression, and anxiety disorders [ 69 ].…”

“…Further follow-up studies using the established case definition and precise diagnostic criteria for long COVID in people with or without reinfection, in both vaccinated and unvaccinated cohorts, may help to better understand the contribution of SARS-CoV-2 reinfections to long COVID burden. Moreover, prospective cohort studies with long observational periods for patients who experienced reinfections during different pandemic waves would be helpful to follow the evolution of long COVID [ 62 ].…”

“…A higher probability of persistent symptoms in the general population are associated with being women, older age, obesity, smoking or vaping, hospitalization, admitted to intensive care, and deprivation 6 , 21 . In addition, vaccination status and COVID-19 reinfection may be associated with post-COVID complaints 22 25 . In that, vaccinated against COVID-19 was associated with decreasing in post-COVID complaints by reducing risk of reinfection and providing additional immunological protection 23 26 .…”
