Effects of using ammonia as a primary fuel on engine performance and emissions in an ammonia/biodiesel dual‐fuel CI engine

Abstract: Ammonia is a promising alternative fuel that can replace current fossil fuels. Hydrogen carrier, zero carbon base emissions, liquid unlike hydrogen, and can be produced using renewable resources, making ammonia a future green fuel for the internal combustion engine. This study aims to show the procedure of utilizing ammonia as a primary fuel with biodiesel in a dual-fuel mode. Hence, a single-cylinder diesel engine was retrofitted to inject ammonia into the intake manifold, and then a pilot dose of biodiesel i… Show more

“…Reiter et al [94] compared the performance of using ammonia-biodiesel and ammonia-diesel in CI engines and no big difference was found. The results from Nadimi et al [109] confirmed the feasibility of burning ammonia-biodiesel in CI engines, which can achieve the same load as neat biodiesel with a slightly decrease in BTE. Elumalai et al [110] did similar investigations but more positive results were obtained.…”

“…Very recent studies on CI engines seem to focus on dual-fuel combustion strategies, namely NH 3 -diesel ,,, or NH 3 -H 2 , , instead of pure NH 3 combustion. Benefits on greenhouse gas emissions can be reaped by displacing some of the diesel with NH 3 . , For example, a reduction of 24% of the greenhouse gas potential compared to pure diesel operation was found by Yousefi et al with, in addition, a 2% indicated thermal efficiency gain.…”
