Effects of Urinary Tract Infection in Patients With Bladder Augmentation and Kidney Transplantation

Abstract: Our study demonstrated that patients with transplanted kidney and augmented bladder had more asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infections than those without bladder augmentation. However, the rate of graft survival was similar between the groups.

“…However, other studies did find this relation . A higher incidence of UTI was also associated with bladder augmentation which may be due to bacterial colonization due to CIC with abnormal bladder emptying and the presence of bowel . Khositseth et al reported a higher incidence of UTI in patients with LUTD as compared with matched controls.…”

He reported also a higher incidence of UTIs in augmented recipients (93%) when compared with non-augmented recipients (39%).…”

“…They did not find significant differences in the incidence of UTI (0.07/year in the augmented group and 0.04 in the control group). Pereira et al (3), compared a group of transplanted patients with augmentation (23p) to a group without augmentation (42p) and found an increased incidence of UTI in the augmented group. However, if only symptomatic UTI was considered, the same number of patients in each groups (4p) developed symptomatic UTI.…”
