Effects of Ultrasound Technique on the Composition of Different Essential Oils

Abstract: The objective of the experiment was to investigate the stability of the composition of selected essential oils in the model systems containing methanol and hexane solutions which were treated with ultrasound. Solutions of the oils, with a concentration of 90 mg/ml, were subjected to the effect of ultrasounds with a frequency of 20 kHz and an output power of 200 W for periods of 2 min and 10 min at 50% and 80% power. The experiment has shown no significant effect on the composition of the essential oils resulti… Show more

“…There was almost a 50% increase in the essential oil efficiency, which confirms the effectiveness of ultrasonic hydrodistillation in the case of extraction of bioactive compounds from hard plant materials like seeds [12]. The process is ecologically significant, because it allows for shortening the distillation stage, electricity, and time consumption.…”

“…The effects of ultrasound on plant essential oils have been recently studied [ 87 ]. Essential oils are unstable to heat, thus, the use of US at low intensities could prevent the degradation of these thermally sensitive compounds.…”

“…Cedar oil can come from Atlantic cedar as well as from Virginia cedar, which is actually not cedar but juniper. It is obvious that the compositions and thus the properties of these oils will be different (Kowalski et al, 2019;Sharmeen et al, 2021;). Many producers of essential oils offer their products, and the amount of low-quality oils far exceeds the amount of valuable ones.…”
