<i>Recently, not only Korea but also the world has been suffering from problems related to coastal erosion. The hard defense method has been primarily used as a countermeasure against erosion. However, this method is expensive and has environmental implications. Hence, interest in other alternative methods, such as the eco-friendly vegetation method, is increasing. In this study, we aim to analyze the hydraulic characteristic of submerged rigid vegetation according to the cross-sectional change through a hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation. From the hydraulic experiment, the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient, and energy dissipation coefficient were analyzed according to the density, width, and multi-row arrangement of the vegetation zone. From numerical simulations, the flow field, vorticity distribution, turbulence distribution, and wave distribution around the vegetation zone were analyzed according to the crest depth, width, density, and multi-row arrangement distance of the vegetation zone. The hydraulic experiment results suggest that the transmission coefficient decreased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased, and the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the hydraulic characteristics significantly. Moreover, the numerical simulations showed that as the crest depth decreased, the width and density of vegetation increased along with vorticity and turbulence intensity, resulting in increased wave height attenuation performance. Additionally, there was no significant difference in vorticity, turbulence intensity, and wave height attenuation performance based on the multi-row arrangement distance. Overall, in the case of submerged rigid vegetation, the wave energy attenuation performance increased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased and crest depth decreased. However, the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the wave energy attenuation performance significantly.</i>

A numerical analysis was performed to analyze the solitary wave control mechanism of a submerged horizontal plate (SHP). A two-dimensional numerical wave tank (NWT), which uses a wave generation method that generates a stable solitary wave, was employed for the numerical analysis. To verify the effectiveness of the NWT, the waveform measured around the SHP was compared to the calculated waveform. Moreover, the approximate and the calculated waveforms were compared in order to examine whether the solitary wave was stably generated. The results of comparison and verification showed that the deformation of the solitary wave by SHP was reproduced with high accuracy in the calculation, while the calculated waveform of NWT also showed a high degree of matching with the approximate waveform. The solitary wave breaking on the SHP satisfied the existing threshold condition A 0 /h c > 0.827-0.833, but breaking did not occur even under the condition A 0 /h c ＝1.2 when the width of the SHP was small. Accordingly, the wave height attenuation of the solitary wave occurred rapidly in a breaking condition. In a non-breaking condition, the energy gradually decreased due to the vorticity and turbulence around the boundary of the SHP, resulting in a gradual attenuation of the solitary wave.

Water Wave Propagation Caused by Underwater Blasting in a 3D Numerical Wave Tank

When underwater blasting is conducted, both shock waves and water waves have an effect on adjacent coastal areas. In this study, an empirical formula for estimating the details of water waves caused by underwater blasting was applied to a non-reflected wave generation system, and a 3D numerical wave tank (NWT) was improved to reproduce the generation and propagation of such water waves. The maximum elevations of the propagated water waves were comparatively analyzed to determine the validity and effectiveness of the NWT. Good agreement was demonstrated between the empirical and simulation results. The generation and propagation of water waves were also simulated under each underwater blasting scenario for the removal of the Todo islet at the Busan Newport International Terminal (PNIT). It was determined that the water waves generated by the underwater blasting scenario examined in this study did not have a significant impact on the PNIT. In addition, multiple-charge blasting caused higher wave heights than single-charge blasting. As the amount of firing charge increased, the wave height also increased. Finally, larger water waves were generated during the later blasting conducted at a deeper depth as compared with an earlier blasting conducted at a relatively shallow depth.
